A power distribution monitoring system is provided that can include a number of features. The system can include a plurality of power line sensing devices configured to attach to individual conductors on a power grid distribution network. In some embodiments, the power line sensors can include a split-core transformer. In some embodiments, a power line sensing device is disposed on each conductor of a three-phase network. The sensing devices can be configured to measure and monitor, among other things, current and electric-field on the conductors. Methods of installing, sealing, and protecting the split-core transformers of the power line sensors are also discussed.

Energy harvest split core design elements for ease of installation, high performance, and long term reliability

A power distribution monitoring system is provided that can include a number of features. The system can include a plurality of monitoring devices configured to attach to individual conductors on a power grid distribution network. In some embodiments, a monitoring device is disposed on each conductor of a three-phase network and utilizes a split-core transformer to harvest energy from the conductors. The monitoring devices can be configured to harvest energy from the AC power grid and apply a DC bias to core halves of the split-core transformer to maintain a positive magnetic force between the core halves. Methods of installing and using the monitoring devices are also provided.

Distribution Line Clamp Force Using DC Bias on Coil

A fault indicator for indicating the occurrence of a fault current in an electrical conductor includes a core assembly which attaches a circuit module to a monitored conductor and provides a concentrated magnetic flux indicative of the current level in the conductor. A magnetic reed switch in the circuit module responds to the magnetic flux in the core assembly to condition an indicator in a remote indicator module to a fault-indicating state in the event of a fault. To facilitate installation and removal of the circuit module from the conductor, the core assembly is formed by a plurality of laminations secured together and arranged in a generally rectangular configuration with their ends juxtaposed along one side thereof and joined with magnetically conductive interlocking coupling members. A spring spanning the remaining opposed sides of the core biases the coupling members into engagement and allows the structure to be fitted over conductors of various sizes, while maintaining a close operative association between the conductor and the magnetic reed switch in the circuit module.

A device for indicating a circuit condition such as the occurrence of a fault current in a high voltage conductor from which the indicator device is suspended includes a housing having at the upper end thereof a pair of outwardly projecting cable engagement members. The engagement members are formed of a resilient insulating material and each include an outwardly projecting base portion and an inwardly projecting end portion which engages and holds the cable against the rear wall of the housing. Operating power for the indicator device is derived from the potential gradient of the electric field surrounding the conductor by means of a metallic plate positioned within the housing adjacent the conductor, and a metallic ring and electrically conductive coating within the lower end of the housing.

Cable mounted capacitively-coupled circuit condition indicating device

A circular magnetic core structure comprises a plurality of laminations of prestressed oriented silicon steel secured together near their juxtaposed ends which are biased into mutual engagement and are separable to receive an alternating current carrying conductor to induce into the core alternating magnetic flux which induces alternating current into a coil on the core corresponding to the current in the conductor. The core and coil are encapsulated in insulating material. In one embodiment self curing cement is applied to the juxtaposed ends after the core is applied to the conductor to seal them together. In another embodiment the ends are provided with interlocking separable coupling extensions of corrosion resisting magnetic material.
