The Electronics Handbook

An internal RISC-type instruction structure furnishes a fixed bit-length template including a plurality of defined bit fields for a plurality of operation (Op) formats. One format includes an instruction-type bit field, two source-operand bit fields and one destination-operand bit field for designating a register-to-register operation. Another format is a load-store format that includes an instruction-type bit field, an identifier of a source or destination register for the respective load or store operation, and bit fields for specifying the segment, base and index parameters of an address.

Caches provide significant performance improvements, though their use in real-time industry is low because current WCET analysis tools require detailed knowledge of program's cache accesses to provide tight WCET estimates. Probabilistic Timing Analysis (PTA) has emerged as a solution to reduce the amount of information needed to provide tight WCET estimates, although it imposes new requirements on hardware design. At cache level, so far only fully-associative random-replacement caches have been proven to fulfill the needs of PTA, but they are expensive in size and energy. In this paper we propose a cache design that allows set-associative and direct-mapped caches to be analysed with PTA techniques. In particular we propose a novel parametric random placement suitable for PTA that is proven to have low hardware complexity and energy consumption while providing comparable performance to that of conventional modulo placement.

A cache design for probabilistically analysable real-time systems

Microprocessor designers use performance models to predict performance and guide their design decisions. Experimental results in the article highlight the significant effort required to achieve a truly cycle-accurate performance model and the necessity for systematic validation of performance models to ensure their accuracy and usefulness.

Calibration of microprocessor performance models

The trace cache is a recently proposed solution to achieving high instruction fetch bandwidth by buffering and reusing dynamic instruction traces. This work presents a new block-based trace cache implementation that can achieve higher IPC performance with more efficient storage of traces. Instead of explicitly storing instructions of a trace, pointers to blocks constituting a trace are stored in a much smaller trace table. The block-based trace cache renames fetch addresses at the basic block level and stores aligned blocks in a block cache. Traces are constructed by accessing the replicated block cache using block pointers from the trace table. Performance potential of the block-based trace cache is quantified and compared with perfect branch prediction and perfect fetch schemes. Comparing to the conventional trace cache, the block-based design can achieve higher IPC, with less impact on cycle time.Results: Using the SPECint95 benchmarks, a 16-wide realistic design of a block-based trace cache can improve performance 75% over a baseline design and to within 7% of a baseline design with perfect branch prediction. With idealized trace prediction, it is shown the block-based trace cache with an 1K-entry block cache achieves the same performance of the conventional trace cache with 32K entries.

The block-based trace cache

The PowerPC, a new RISC architecture derived from IBM’s POWER architecture, is currently available as an open-system standard. To provide both software compatibility among PowerPC processors and maximum implementation flexibility, its designers specified the PowerPC architecture in four books. As we show here, Book 1 describes the user-mode programming model and instruction set common to all PowerPC processors.
