Abstract There’s a need to look for alternate sources of energy due to increasing population. The utilization of energy from the vibrations created by the vehicles and the activity by people is relevant for the energy deficient countries. This review incorporates various research papers that deal with piezoelectric materials to generate energy. Along with different techniques to increase energy efficiency, papers dealing with integration of piezoelectric sensors with smart street and traffic lights have also been reviewed. However, the authors believe that with further research into piezoelectric material, a model can be proposed which is both time and energy efficient.

A review on piezoelectric energy for smart street and traffic lights

This article discusses the energy-saving efficiency of streetlights using two operating modes, namely timer mode and light intensity mode. Energy measurements are carried out in real time through an IoT-based smart streetlight monitoring system. The data used to compare the energy consumption in the two modes is the power and the length of time the streetlights are on. The results of this comparison will show the value of energy savings. Streetlights with timer mode usually operate from 6 pm to 6 am. Meanwhile, a streetlight with light intensity mode works according to the ambient lighting in light conditions below 10 lux. Implementation results show that streetlights with light intensity mode are 1.13 Wh more efficient than timer mode.

Energy Saving of IoT-based Light Intensity on Smart Streetlight

Vehicle batteries have a large energy storage capacity and can be utilized to provide backup power to residential loads during load shedding. Solar energy might also be utilized to charge plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in order to increase backup power for domestic loads. This study employs a method for optimal power management and V2H use. Load Sharing Backup Battery in Electric Vehicle using PV Array

The footstep power generation system using different configurations of piezo-sensors are analyzed in this paper. Energy generated by human walking, jumping and running is used as a source of energy which is converted to an equivalent electrical energy using piezoelectric effect. Experimental analysis of circular type piezoelectric sensors connected in different configurations- series, parallel and combination of series-parallel and sensors of various diameters show that series-parallel combination generates more voltage and is stable compared to other configurations. Circular type piezo sensor model is developed in the COMSOL Multiphysics simulator which shows near performance with the experimental results.

Parametric analysis of piezoelectric-sensor array in foot step power generation system

With the rapid development of global technology and the expansion of traditional industries, energy shortages and environmental pollution have become issues that cannot be ignored. Ubiquitous lighting facilities, as a significant feature of modern construction, consume a lot of energy, and with the acceleration of urbanization, the construction scale of road lighting will continue to expand, and energy consumption will also be further expanded. As a key technology for the upgrading of traditional industries, the Internet of Things technology is also a key technology for building a smart city. The unified control and deployment of lighting facilities through the Internet of Things technology can promote the development of lighting facilities in the direction of intelligence and energy saving. This paper first briefly introduces the architecture design of a smart light pole system, and briefly describes the realized functions and an application case in the expressway service area, providing a systematic solution for the construction of smart lighting facilities.

Architecture design of smart light pole system based on IoT technology

Street lights have become part of our everyday life which are becoming smartest. Now a days most of the system are replaced with LED lamps and various technologies like automation and communication based on the sensors in order to make an energy efficient and smart system. This paper provides an optimum solution for the smart functions of the street lights. Green energy harvesting seeks to supply power without a grid connection to electrical or electronic networks. The collection of thermoelectric energy depends primarily on the activity of the thermoelectric generator (TEG). Here, we plan to produce electrical energy from non-biodegradable waste by burning it and also to take energy from piezo electrical sensors. So here, to light the street light, we plan to produce electricity from waste materials, solar, foot power and store electricity in the battery.
