Solid-state switch-mode rectification converters have reached a matured level for improving power quality in terms of power-factor correction (PFC), reduced total harmonic distortion at input AC mains and precisely regulated DC output in buck, boost, buck-boost and multilevel modes with unidirectional and bidirectional power flow. This paper deals with a comprehensive review of improved power quality converters (IPQCs) configurations, control approaches, design features, selection of components, other related considerations, and their suitability and selection for specific applications. It is targeted to provide a wide spectrum on the status of IPQC technology to researchers, designers and application engineers working on switched-mode AC-DC converters. A classified list of more than 450 research publications on the state of art of IPQC is also given for a quick reference.

A review of single-phase improved power quality AC-DC converters

A transmitter comprises a baseband processor, a wideband phase modulator and an amplitude modulated amplifier. A signal is provided through the baseband processor and is converted into polar coordinates, comprised of amplitude and phase components, with the amplitude component being transmitted to the amplitude modulated amplifier. The amplitude modulated amplifier being comprised of independently controllable current sources, and with the phase component being transmitted to the wideband phase modulator, for modulation upon a carrier wave, and subsequent transmission to the amplitude modulated amplifier for amplification according to control imposed by the amplitude component upon the current sources.

This paper presents an application of an ALTERA FPGA Device, in the FLEX1OK family, producing pulse width modulation (PWM) signals with the vector modulation technique for an IGBT inverter. Using a single FPGA chip for the practical implementation of the modulator, rather than a system consisting of microprocessor and external memory, has many advantages including less use of power and space, short design time, greater speed and reliability. The designed circuit can generate PWM signals at many different frequencies, and also, the input values used to adjust output signal may be obtained through either a 4/spl times/4 keypad or microprocessor port.

This paper presents a novel idea to integrate three of the space vector modulation (SVM) schemes, including the alternating zero sequence, the symmetric sequence and the bus clamped scheme, in a single FPGA chip which provides many advantages. FPGA-based IC design for inverter with vector modulation technique

This work presents the design of a three-phase inverter with insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). The pulse width modulation technique based on the space vector theory is analysed in detail. The modulation strategy considers the calculation of the on-times of the different voltage vectors that must be applied to the load, to generate the voltage vector required by the speed control system of the machine. These times are calculated previously and stored in a ROM, producing a simple, reliable, compact and low cost digital modulator. The inverter behaves as a voltage source with variable amplitude and frequency. By using the space vector theory, the number of commutations in the inverter is minimized, reaching a reduction in the switching frequency and in the current distortion. >

IGBT inverter with vector modulation

This paper presents a control method for a high power factor current source converter, which uses power transistors working with a high switching frequency to reduce the harmonics injected to the three-phase load, while delivering a controlled DC current with small ripple to the load. Special attention is paid to the problem of resonances that appear at the input filter of the converter. Experimental results show that the use of a modulation method with a fixed frequency reduces the oscillations of the input filter, in comparison to methods with variable switching frequency.
