Steels for bearings

The mechanical properties of ex-situ and in-situ metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) have proven to be both scientifically unique and of potentially important for practical applications. However, the underlying deformation mechanisms remain to be studied. In this article, we review the development, fabrication, microstructures, and properties of MGMCs, including the room-temperature, cryogenic-temperature, and high-temperature mechanical properties upon quasi-static and dynamic loadings. In parallel, the deformation mechanisms are experimentally and theoretically explored. Moreover, the fatigue, corrosion, and wear behaviors of MGMCs are discussed. Finally, the potential applications and important unresolved issues are identified and discussed.

Fatigue Performance Improvement in AISI 4140 Steel by Dynamic Strain Aging and Dynamic Precipitation During Warm Laser Shock Peening

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) can exhibit excellent combinations of strength and fracture toughness that cannot be achieved by traditional metals, making them attractive for load bearing, mechanical engineering applications. Furthermore, recent research on BMGs has shown that many early perceived shortcomings, such as apparent brittleness or poor fatigue resistance, are not as big of a problem as once thought. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the unique mechanical characteristics of BMGs along with some of the strategies that may be used to improve or exploit their characteristics so that BMGs may be used as structural materials in engineering applications.

Notches lead to a decrease in the strength of machine parts in comparison to unnotched structures. The strength reduction is caused by stress concentration at the notch base. In static or dynamic calculations this effect is considered by the notch stress concentration factor. In this paper, simulations with a titanium single-crystal were carried out to analyze the dependence of the notch-stress concentration factor on the orientation of the anisotropic single-crystal material. Furthermore, numerical simulations and experiments with notched commercially pure titanium specimens have been performed to compare the stress–strain relationships until the ultimate tensile stress. The strain rate and grain size have been varied to identify dependencies on the microstructural situation which may influence the strength during the tests. Experimental and numerical investigation of the microstructural influence on the deformation behavior of notched cp-titanium specimens

Single-crystal like nuclear magnetic resonance spin-echo spectra are obtained for powder samples of the antiferromagnet CeCu5Au in the paramagnetic phase. Line shifts and quadrupolar splittings are analyzed for 63Cu and 65Cu. The influence of the extreme magnetic anisotropy of the CeCu6-xAux compounds on nuclear spin relaxation is discussed.

Single-crystal like NMR spectra of CeCu5Au powder samples

Microscale machining processes modifying component surfaces are applied in various fields: from drive technology through plant engineering to medical technology. The impact of the fine structures formed in the material on its behavior and mechanical properties need to be investigated in more detail. Besides the examination of the cyclic and quasi-static behavior of micromachined samples, analysing the near-surface microstructure and the hardness is of great importance. The nanoindentation allows for the determination of local mechanical properties in small analysis volumes. Its applicability to determine the hardness in micromachined near-surface areas including the metallographic preparation for commercially pure titanium is presented in this work.
