GLIMPSE. I. An SIRTF Legacy Project to Map the Inner Galaxy

Although fundamental for astrophysics, the processes that produce massive stars are not well understood. Large distances, high extinction, and short timescales of critical evolutionary phases make observations of these processes challenging. Lacking good observational guidance, theoretical models have remained controversial. This review offers a basic description of the collapse of a massive molecular core and a critical discussion of the three competing concepts of massive star formation: ▪  monolithic collapse in isolated cores ▪  competitive accretion in a protocluster environment ▪  stellar collisions and mergers in very dense systems We also review the observed outflows, multiplicity, and clustering properties of massive stars, the upper initial mass function and the upper mass limit. Toward Understanding Massive Star Formation

We present a grid of radiation transfer models of axisymmetric young stellar objects (YSOs), covering a wide range of stellar masses (from 0.1 to 50 M☉) and evolutionary stages (from the early envelope infall stage to the late disk-only stage). The grid consists of 20,000 YSO models, with spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and polarization spectra computed at 10 viewing angles for each model, resulting in a total of 200,000 SEDs. We have made a careful assessment of the theoretical and observational constraints on the physical conditions of disks and envelopes in YSOs and have attempted to fully span the corresponding regions in parameter space. These models are publicly available on a dedicated Web server. In this paper we summarize the main features of our models, as well as the range of parameters explored. Having a large grid covering reasonable regions of parameter space allows us to shed light on many trends in near- and mid-IR observations of YSOs (such as changes in the spectral indices and colors of their SEDs), linking them with physical parameters (such as disk and infalling envelope parameters). In particular, we examine the dependence of the spectral indices of the model SEDs on envelope accretion rate and disk mass. In addition, we show variations of spectral indices with stellar temperature, disk inner radius, and disk flaring power for a subset of disk-only models. We also examine how changing the wavelength range of data used to calculate spectral indices affects their values. We show sample color-color plots of the entire grid as well as simulated clusters at various distances with typical Spitzer sensitivities. We find that young embedded sources generally occupy a large region of color-color space due to inclination and stellar temperature effects. Disk sources occupy a smaller region of color-color space but overlap substantially with the region occupied by embedded sources, especially in the near- and mid-IR. We identify regions in color-color space where our models indicate that only sources at a given evolutionary stage should lie. We find that, while near-IR (such as JHK) and mid-IR (such as IRAC) fluxes are useful in discriminating between stars and YSOs, and are useful for identifying very young sources, the addition of longer wavelength data such as MIPS 24 μm is extremely valuable for determining the evolutionary stage of YSOs.

Interpreting Spectral Energy Distributions from Young Stellar Objects. I. A Grid of 200,000 YSO Model SEDs

Infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) are dense molecular clouds seen as extinction features against the bright mid-infrared Galactic background. Millimeter continuum maps toward 38 IRDCs reveal extended cold dust emission to be associated with each of the IRDCs. IRDCs range in morphology from filamentary to compact and have masses of 120 to 16,000 M?, with a median mass of ~940 M?. Each IRDC contains at least one compact (?0.5 pc) dust core and most show multiple cores. We find 140 cold millimeter cores unassociated with MSX 8 ?m emission. The core masses range from 10 to 2100 M?, with a median mass of ~120 M?. The slope of the IRDC core mass spectrum (? ~ 2.1 ? 0.4) is similar to that of the stellar IMF. Assuming that each core will form a single star, the majority of the cores will form OB stars. IRDC cores have similar sizes, masses, and densities as hot cores associated with individual, young high-mass stars, but they are much colder. We therefore suggest that IRDC represent an earlier evolutionary phase in high-mass star formation. In addition, because IRDCs contain many compact cores and have the same sizes and masses as molecular clumps associated with young clusters, we suggest that IRDCs are the cold precursors to star clusters. Indeed, an estimate of the star formation rate within molecular clumps with similar properties to IRDCs (~2 M? yr-1) is comparable to the global star formation rate in the Galaxy, supporting the idea that all stars may form in such clumps.

Infrared dark clouds: precursors to star clusters

We investigate massive star formation in turbulent, magnetized, parsec-scale clumps of molecular clouds including protostellar outflow feedback using three dimensional numerical simulations of effective resolution 2048{sup 3}. The calculations are carried out using a block structured adaptive mesh refinement code that solves the ideal MHD equations including self-gravity and implements accreting sink particles. We find that, in the absence of regulation by magnetic fields and outflow feedback, massive stars form readily in a turbulent, moderately condensed clump of {approx} 1,600 M{sub {circle_dot}} (containing {approx} 10{sup 2} initial Jeans masses), along with a cluster of hundreds of lower mass stars. The massive stars are fed at high rates by (1) transient dense filaments produced by large-scale turbulent compression at early times, and (2) by the clump-wide global collapse resulting from turbulence decay at late times. In both cases, the bulk of the massive star's mass is supplied from outside a 0.1 pc-sized 'core' that surrounds the star. In our simulation, the massive star is clump-fed rather than core-fed. The need for large-scale feeding makes the massive star formation prone to regulation by outflow feedback, which directly opposes the feeding processes. The outflows reduce the mass accretion rates onto the massive stars by breaking up the dense filaments that feed the massive star formation at early times, and by collectively slowing down the global collapse that fuel the massive star formation at late times. The latter is aided by a moderate magnetic field of strength in the observed range (corresponding to a dimensionless clump mass-to-flux ratio {lambda} {approx} a few); the field allows the outflow momenta to be deposited more efficiently inside the clump. We conclude that the massive star formation in our simulated turbulent, magnetized, parsec-scale clump is outflow-regulated and clump-fed (ORCF for short). An important implication is that the formation of low-mass stars in a dense clump can affect the formation of massive stars in the same clump, through their outflow feedback on the clump dynamics. In a companion paper, we discuss the properties of the lower mass cluster members formed along with the massive stars, including their mass distribution and spatial clustering.

Outflow Feedback Regulated Massive Star Formation in Parsec-Scale Cluster-Forming Clumps

▪ Abstract This review discusses three main topics: evolution to the ultra-compact (UC) state; the properties of UC HII regions and their environments; and UC HII regions as probes of Galactic structure. The evolution to UC HII regions begins in giant molecular clouds that provide the natal material for prestellar cores that evolve into hot cores, the precursors of UC HII regions. The properties of each evolutionary phase are reviewed, with particular emphasis on those of hot cores. The observed properties of UC HII regions and their environments are summarized with emphasis on the physical processes that may produce the observed properties. The final section summarizes the use of UC HII regions as probes of Galactic structure: in particular, the Galactic population and distribution of newly formed massive stars, the location of spiral arms, and the average galactocentric temperature and abundance gradients.
