TL;DR: In this area, rapid and sustained fluid-mud concentration and trapping are associated with fresh water-salt water interaction and estuarine front activity on the continental shelf due to the huge suspended-sediment discharge of the Amazon River (106 × 754 tons yr− 1 ± 9%), part of which is transported alongshore as mud banks.

TL;DR: In this article, changes in the channel morphology of the Mekong proper and the Bassac, the two main distributaries in the 250 km-long deltaic reach from the Cambodian border to the coast, were analyzed using channel depth data for 1998 and 2008.
