A panel data were collected from a sample of 14 banks covering 6 years spanning from 2012 when the policy was introduced in Nigeria to 2017. The study used return on Asset as proxy for bank performance while the value transactions done through the ATM, POS, Internet Banking, NIP and NEFT platforms (E-banking Products) were used to proxy cash less policy. In other to ensure the validity and the reliability of our data, we therefore subjected our data to a diagnostic test using Descriptive Statistic Analysis, Multicolinearity test, Correlation testing, and Herteroskadaticity testing. Findings from the study revealed that that (ATMV) has a positive and significant effect on return on assets (ROA) of banks in Nigeria while , POSV, WEBV, NIPV and NEFV were found to have a positive but insignificant effect on ROA of quoted banks in Nigeria. The study concluded that E-banking products as a proxy for cash less policy has positive effect on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. It was thus recommended among others that bank management should pay more attention on the activities that will improve the ATM services if they wish to increase the ROA.

Cashless Policy and Financial Performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria

Technology innovation is one of the defining attributes of the 21st century. The banking sector amongst other key sectors has embraced the use of new technologies to offer electronic banking (e-banking) services. E-banking has been introduced in various economies of the world as a way of delivering effective and efficient banking services. Despite the several benefits of e-banking technologies, many individual bank customers in Nigeria have not adopted most of the available channels. ATM has remained the most patronized compared to other channels such as the point of sales (POS), online banking and the mobile banking. Promotional offers and various publicity for these platforms by commercial banks as well as the introduction of the cash policy which made the use of these platforms mandatory have not yielded substantial outcome. Therefore, the researcher set out to carry out two interrelated studies in a bid to explore the levels of e-banking adoption by individual bank customers in Nigeria. Firstly, a comparative analysis of the starting conditions of e-banking in Nigeria and the UK was carried out using secondary sources of data. The second part of the study examined the significance of an extended model of Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DIT) on e-banking adoption in Nigeria. This extended model entails the addition of cost variables to the mix of Rogerss five attributes of innovation diffusion (i.e. Relative Advantage, Complexity, Compatibility, Trialability and Observability). Cost variables according to this study are the three types of switching costs, the available complementary assets and the usefulness of available services. Based on this DIT extended model, adoption levels of five e-banking platforms: ATM; POS; Online banking; Mobile banking and telephone banking services were investigated. Data for this study were obtained from both the service providers (the commercial banks) and the service users (individual customers). NVivo 10 was used to analyse the qualitative data while ordinal regression modelling was utilised to analyse the quantitative data obtained. According to the findings of this research, the security of the platforms, need for a strategic enlightenment campaign as well as infrastructural development (i.e. internet and electricity) are the three key factors that are fundamental to increase adoption of e-banking platforms in Nigeria. Findings also reveal the peculiarity of each of the e-banking platforms as different variables significantly predict uptake of individual platforms while Compatibility, Observability, Gender and Education emerged as significant predictors of ATM. Compatibility, Trialability Procedural Switching Cost and Gender predict POS patronage. For online banking, Compatibility, Procedural Switching Cost, Gender and Education emerged as significant predictors of this platform while Financial Switching Cost, Relational Switching Cost, Age and Education significantly predict the use of mobile banking. Telephone banking is not currently available to individual bank customers in Nigeria and as such further discussions on the quantitative output were discontinued. Following the expert witness feedback of these key findings, the researcher concludes that it is imperative to critically assess the availability of the enabling mechanisms/structure before introducing an innovation such as e-banking. The importance of this assessment is to evaluate and carefully direct the approach to that which fits such innovation. Underestimating or ignoring the impact of these fundamental structures usually have a negative impact on adoption as evident in the findings of this research which pointed that the current level of infrastructure of the country does not support the uptake of this innovation. This study also concludes that, the security of the platforms, the development of e-banking enlightenment campaign and infrastructural inadequacies should be addressed. Furthermore, attempts to unify or adopt a singular approach to increase e-banking patronage will not yield a significant result because each platform is unique. Thus, subsequent governmental policies and the CBN dictates on e-banking adoption should be formulated or modified based on the consideration of the enabling mechanism. Banks should adopt specific strategies towards increasing the patronage each platform.

Technology innovation management in the Nigerian banking industry : integrating stakeholders' perspectives : an exploration of strategy and policy implications

Abstract 
This study makes an analysis of infrastructural challenges and the cashless policy in Kaduna state, Nigeria. A survey was conducted to collect the primary data through a structured questionnaire and interviews with bank customers, bank officials, and security personnel to obtain information on infrastructural challenges since the introduction of the Cashless policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2012. Frequency distribution and simple percentage methods are used to analyze the data.  Findings show that infrastructural challenges include network failure and infrastructural deficiency, debiting by Automated Teller Machine (ATM) without disbursing cash to beneficiaries, problems not rectified quickly by the banks, and charging by banks for using electronic banking methods. This leads to fraud, cybercrimes, and reduced confidence in the banking system. It is recommended that banks should be made to provide the minimum infrastructure required for cashless policy to succeed. In addition, there should be adequate cyber security measures implemented by banks and the government.

Analysis of Infrastructural Challenges, Cybercrime, and the Cashless Policy in Nigeria

The reform of the financial sector is a critical component for the process of economic growth and development. These views are abundantly emphasised in empirical literatures that relate financial sector expansion to economic growth. Recognising this fact, Nigerian economic managers have focussed on the banking sector as a route to impact economic policy changes and policy shifts. The most recent of these financial sectors economic policy was the formal introduction of cashless financial policy in January 2012. The advantages and disadvantages of the cashless policy with the Naira redesign strategy on financial performance and the Nigerian macroeconomy were analysed in this research. This research study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) to examine this. A SLR was performed using a sample of 100 research articles chosen from a pool of 400 papers obtained from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, ABS journals and, among other sources. As a result, the cashless policy provides enormous advantages to the financial industry. It was suggested that sufficient infrastructural and legal framework should be enhanced to assist in facilitating the effective implementation of the policy.

A Critical Evaluation of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Cash-less Policy, Currency Redesign, Financial Performance and Macroeconomy: The Socio- Economic Ramifications perspectives

The Central Bank of Nigeria introduced cashless policy initiative to accomplish two main macro-socio-economic policy objectives of increased convenience and greater financial inclusion in Nigeria. This study evaluates Nigeria cashless policy implementation using a four point Likert scale questionnaire administered to six hundred respondents. The results of the study show that the twin policy objectives investigated were partially achieved. Also the study reveals that social infrastructures in power and telecommunications need improvement and expansion and the need to create more awareness to encourage the unbanked to embrace banking culture. This study recommends vigorous investments on cyber security, strengthening of internet protocol and controls in the banks and enactment of relevant legislative laws to curb cybercrimes.
