A treatment of a shaped flexible elastomer item so as to form a coating of a hydrophilic polymer on the surface of the elastomer. The treatment encompasses cleaning of the elastomer surface, immersion of the elastomer in a concentrated solution of a strong acid such as sulphuric acid, washing, and subsequent dipping of the treated elastomer in a solution of an uncured hydrophilic polymer. The treated elastomer is then held at an elevated temperature for a period of time to cure the polymer coating and to bond the polymer coating to the elastomer.

Coating process of elastomeric material

Rubber particles, to be used as fillers or extenders for various composite polymer systems, are chlorinated by a gas-solid phase reaction with a chlorine-containing gas. A composite polymer containing the chlorinated rubber fillers or extenders exhibits a higher flexural modulus than if prepared using an unchlorinated rubber filler or extender. Chlorination of the rubber particles is carried out by contacting the finely divided rubber particles with a chlorine-containing gas comprising at least about 5 volume percent chlorine. Advantageously, the chlorine can be diluted with air, nitrogen or other essentially inert gases and may contain minor amounts of fluorine. Improved performance is obtained with nitrogen dilution of the chlorine gas over air dilution. Improved polymer composite systems having higher flexural modulus result from the use of the chlorinated rubber particles as fillers instead of unchlorinated rubber particles.

A water soluble hydrophilic resin in an alcohol-free polymer solution and a method of application to natural rubber and synthetic latex products such as surgeon's gloves, catheters and condoms to increase the lubricity of the rubber products where they come into contact with skin or other tissue. The hydrophilic resin is applied in a single application step in an aqueous solution in the absence of alcohol or a separate acid priming step.

Aqueous coating composition and method

An acidic cleaning aqueous solution for carrying out a low temperature acidic cleaning of aluminum and aluminum alloy and a cleaning method for the same free from harmful fluorine and chromium ions. The acidic cleaning aqueous solution includes oxidized metal ions as an etching promoter, an inorganic acid, a surfactant and a certain amount of polyhydric alcohols having at least two hydroxyl groups directly coupled with two adjacent carbon atoms of a principal chain within one molecule and further includes an oxidizing agent for oxidizing the oxidized metal ions reduced in the cleaning. Certain alcohols in the acidic cleaning aqueous solution can control the oxidative decomposition reaction of the surfactant to obtain a long life acidic cleaning aqueous solution.

Acidic cleaning aqueous solution for aluminum and aluminum alloy and method for cleaning the same

A homogeneous cation-exchange membrane made of one or more fluorinated polymer having cation-exchangeable groups is swollen with a water miscible organic solvent and then the solvent is removed from the swollen membrane and then membrane is treated with hydrochloric acid. The cation-exchange membrane of the fluorinated polymer having cation-exchangeable groups is modified to reduce the permeability of hydroxyl group ions by swelling it and removing the water-miscible organic solvent and then, treating it with hydrochloric acid.

Method of improving characteristic of cation-exchange membrane by swelling in water miscible organic solvent and treating further with hydrochloric acid

A method of surface modification of polymer materials, according to which said materials are treated with an aqueous solution comprising a mineral acid, a mineral oxidant, and a salt of hydrochloric, hydrobromic, or hydroiodic acid. Water, said mineral acid, mineral oxidant and salt are taken in a weight ratio of 50-1000:0.3-7:0.1-7:1-15 respectively. By carrying out modification of polymer materials in accordance with the present method, the initial strength of the treated materials remains unaffected. Moreover, in the process of treating the materials, the latter acquire desired adhesion properties, whereby strength of cementing of polymer materials with each other, with metals, wood, glass-reinforced plastics and glass is ensured.
