TL;DR: The ability of an elliptical galaxy to produce a central radio source appears to be determined by both its luminosity and the gas supply in the inner ∼ 1 kpc of the galaxy as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The ability of an elliptical galaxy to produce a central radio source appears to be determined by both its luminosity and the gas supply in the inner ∼ 1 kpc of the galaxy. At least half of all nearby ellipticals contain 103 – 105 M⊙ of ionised gas in their central regions (often in association with dust) and show weakly active nuclei characterised by a LINER-like spectrum and radio emission at a level of 1020 – 1024 W/Hz (1037 – 1041 erg/s).
