Journal ArticleDOI
The Origin of The Acheulean: The 1.7 Million-Year-Old Site of FLK West, Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)
Fernando Diez-Martín,P. Sanchez Yustos,David Uribelarrea,Enrique Baquedano,Darren F. Mark,Audax Mabulla,Cristina Fraile,Javier Duque,Inmaculada Aznar Díaz,Alfredo Pérez-González,José Yravedra,Charles P. Egeland,Elia Organista,Manuel Domínguez-Rodrigo +13 more
TL;DR: A detailed technological study is provided and evidence of the use of these tools on the butchery and consumption of fauna, probably by early Homo erectus sensu lato is provided, showing that complex cognition was present from the earliest stages of the Acheulean.
Journal ArticleDOI
On meat eating and human evolution: A taphonomic analysis of BK4b (Upper Bed II, Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania), and its bearing on hominin megafaunal consumption
Manuel Domínguez-Rodrigo,Henry T. Bunn,Audax Mabulla,Enrique Baquedano,David Uribelarrea,Alfredo Pérez-González,Agness Gidna,José Yravedra,Fernando Diez-Martín,Charles P. Egeland,Rebeca Barba,María del Carmen Arriaza,Elia Organista,M. Ansón +13 more
TL;DR: Evidence supports that meat consumption was tightly linked to the physiology that shaped the evolution of the authors' genus Homo erectus, and unveils the need of new behavioral models to explain the functionality of Acheulian central-place sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
A new approach to raw material use in the exploitation of animal carcasses at BK (Upper Bed II, Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania): a micro-photogrammetric and geometric morphometric analysis of fossil cut marks
José Yravedra,Miguel Ángel Maté-González,Miguel Ángel Maté-González,Juan Francisco Palomeque-González,Julia Aramendi,Verónica Estaca-Gómez,María San Juan Blazquez,Elena García Vargas,Elia Organista,Diego González-Aguilera,Mari Carmen Arriaza,Lucía Cobo-Sánchez,Agness Gidna,David Uribelarrea del Val,Enrique Baquedano,Audax Mabulla,Manuel Domínguez-Rodrigo +16 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a sample of cut-marked bones from the Bell's Korongo (BK) site (Upper Bed II, Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania), which is an emblematic early Pleistocene site where a large faunal assemblage, including a diverse megafauna, occurs in association with quartzite and basalt industries, was used to identify the raw materials used in the butchery of carcasses.
Journal ArticleDOI
A new methodological approach to the taphonomic study of paleontological and archaeological faunal assemblages: a preliminary case study from Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania)
Manuel Domínguez-Rodrigo,José Yravedra,Elia Organista,Agness Gidna,Jean-Baptiste Fourvel,Enrique Baquedano +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a morphotypic definition (taphotype) of each long limb element and a bootstrapped correspondence analysis are used to classify bone damage patterns and detect the type of carnivores involved in the modification of epiphyseal portions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biotic and abiotic processes affecting the formation of BK Level 4c (Bed II, Olduvai Gorge) and their bearing on hominin behavior at the site
Elia Organista,Manuel Domínguez-Rodrigo,José Yravedra,David Uribelarrea,Mª Carmen Arriaza,Mª Cruz Ortega,Audax Mabulla,Agness Gidna,Enrique Baquedano +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, a spatial analysis of a new archaeological sub-level (BK4c) has been performed to understand the role played by hominins in its formation.
