Journal ArticleDOI

Stress in birds due to routine handling and a technique to avoid it

TL;DR: In entirely undisturbed geese, blood levels of catecholamines, corticosterone, and lactate were as low or even lower than the lowest values previously reported for birds, and stress-induced variations in pH that would have concealed detection of nutrition-induced changes in pH were eliminated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Selectivity of fatty acid mobilization: a general metabolic feature of adipose tissue

TL;DR: Under conditions of stimulated lipolysis, the selectivity of fatty acid mobilization is a general metabolic feature of adipose tissue and is a metabolic feature common to all adipose tissues.
Journal ArticleDOI

Blockade of fatty acid oxidation mimics phase II-phase III transition in a fasting bird, the king penguin.

TL;DR: Strong similarities between changes observed at the phase II-phase III transition in fasting penguins support the view that entrance into phase III, and especially the end of protein sparing, is related to decreased FA oxidation, rather than reduced NEFA availability.
Journal ArticleDOI

Restoration of Body Energy Reserves during Refeeding in Rats Is Dependent on Both the Intensity of Energy Restriction and the Metabolic Status at the Onset of Starvation

TL;DR: In P3 refed rats, body lipids were restored preferentially by significant contribution from endogenous lipid production, and the extent of lipid depletion has important consequences for the restoration pattern of the body reserves.
Journal ArticleDOI

Changes in plasma fatty acids indicate change in nutritional status in developing Weddell seal pups

TL;DR: The concentrations and the fatty acid compositions (weight percent) of three plasma lipid fractions (phospholipids, cholesteryl esters, and triacylglycerols) were examined in five Weddell seal pups through suckling, the post-weaning fast and periods of independent foraging, but fasting versus foraging pups could not be clearly distinguished.
