TL;DR: In this paper, the authors determined the factors affecting the profitability of licensed commercial banks in Sri Lanka, including the effect of the prolonged conflict which ended in 2009, using an error correction model together with data for the period 2006-2014 of 10 major LCBs, and revealed that, in the short run, capital and liquidity have a positive effect on bank profitability and default loans, interest margin (IM), operating cost, and interest rates (IRs) have a negative effect.
Abstract: This study determines the factors affecting the profitability of licensed commercial banks (LCBs) in Sri Lanka, including the effect of the prolonged conflict which ended in 2009. Using an error correction model together with data for the period 2006–2014 of 10 major LCBs, the results reveal that, in the short run, capital and liquidity have a positive effect on bank profitability and default loans, interest margin (IM), operating cost, and interest rates (IRs) have a negative effect. In the long run, bank profitability is significantly impacted by default loans, IM, real GDP, inflation, IRs, capital, operating cost, and conflict. The ending of the prolonged conflict has significantly contributed to improved bank performance.

TL;DR: This article presented an empirical analysis of Australian private consumption patterns utilizing a system-wide approach to analyse how the dominant component, private consumption, is allocated among ten broad groups of consumer goods.
Abstract: This paper presents an empirical analysis of Australian private consumption patterns utilising a system-wide approach to analyse how the dominant component, private consumption, is allocated among ten broad groups of consumer goods. Australian consumers, on average, allocate about two-thirds of their income on food, housing, transport and recreation. We considered three demand models, the AIDS, Rotterdam and CBS demand systems, for estimation. The estimated income elasticities reveal that food, alcohol and tobacco, housing and medical care are necessities. All the own-price elasticities are negative and less than one in absolute value (except for recreation), indicating that demand for most goods is price inelastic. In addition, we tested the demand theory hypotheses, homogeneity, Slutsky symmetry and preference independence and found them to be acceptable.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify 10 major countries from where most of the tourists visit Vietnam and model the inbound tourist arrivals to Vietnam from these countries using annual data for the period 1995-2016.
Abstract: Tourism is a key component that enhances trade between countries. The Vietnamese tourism sector has seen a rapid growth in the last decade. In this aspect, new knowledge on Vietnam’s inbound tourism will provide useful insight for improving trade and investment in Vietnam, especially investment in the Vietnamese tourism sector. In this study, we identify 10 major countries from where most of the tourists visit Vietnam and model the inbound tourist arrivals to Vietnam from these countries using annual data for the period 1995-2016.
