Despite the fact that the concept of the “macroeconomy” first emerged after the 1930s, only becoming prevalent after the 1950s, macroeconomic terms are ubiquitous today. Historians refer to the Keynesian Revolution as the origin of the macroeconomic revolution. This paper addresses the revolution from an accounting point of view, and argues that the prevalence of the notion of the macroeconomy and the widespread of economic management of modern society originate partly from the movement of accounting expressionism that is the social construction of official economic reality in an accounting framework. The development history of British national accounting is of central importance to the development of macroeconomics. This paper integrates the abstract theme of social constructivism with concrete evidence from recently available archives of Keynes, Stone, Meade and Bray.

The review of Austrian economics

This paper examines Robert E. Lucas's views on the relationship of macro- economics to real world economic phenomena, and on Keynes's place in its history, suggesting that these stem from a particular and debatable understanding of how the sub- discipline has evolved. It considers some implications for today's awkward economic facts of aspects of Keynes' General Theory, not so much its speculations about the role of psychology and social conventions in the economic decisions of individual agents recently highlighted by Akerlof and Shiller (2009) however, as its insights into the influence of the monetary system on the coordination of these decisions, along lines later extended by Clower (1965) and Leijonhufvud (1968). It concludes that the questions about co-ordination that Keynes addressed, not to mention some of his answers, are well worth revisiting.

Lucas, Keynes, and the Crisis

Economists and non-economists are more inclined to read about John Maynard Keynes than about other eminent dead economists, and such terms as New Classical, New Keynesian, and Post Keynesian indicate that the issues that divided Keynes from those he labeled as classical still inspire research, however distant and hazy may be the historical awareness of such recent mainstream writers as Mankiw (1992). Widely read biographies by Don Moggridge and Robert Skidelsky reveal both a fascinating life and a public career of historical significance from the critique of the Versailles peace treaty to the Bretton Woods negotiations, and a more specialized literature considers Keynes’s views on philosophy and probability (and will undoubtedly be revived when Rod O’Donnell’s long-awaited supplement to Keynes’s Collected Writings finally appears), but most of all the continuing attention to Keynes focuses on his repute as the man who revolutionized economics.
