A single comprehensive equation is developed for the rate of heat and mass transfer from a circular cylinder in crossflow, covering a complete range of Pr (or Sc) and the entire range of Re for which data are available. This expression is a lower bound (except possibly for RePr < 0.2); free-stream turbulence, end effects, channel blockage, free convection, etc., may increase the rate. In the complete absence of free convection, the theoretical expression of Nakai and Okazaki may be more accurate for RePr < 0.2. The correlating equation is based on theoretical results for the effect of Pr in the laminar boundary layer, and on both theoretical and experimental results for the effect of Re. The process of correlation reveals the need for theoretical results for the effect of Pr in the region of the wake. Additional experimental data for the effect of Pr at small Pe and for the effect of Re during the transition in the point of separation are also needed.

A Correlating Equation for Forced Convection From Gases and Liquids to a Circular Cylinder in Crossflow

The influence of surface roughness on the vortex-shedding frequency in the wake of a single cylinder has been investigated. The experiments were carried out in an atmospherical and a high-pressure wind tunnel. The tests were started with a smooth cylinder. Then the wake flow of cylinders with relative roughnesses of ks/d = 75 × 10−5, 300 × 10−5, 900 × 10−5, and 3000 × 10−5 was investigated.For all roughness parameters tested the Strouhal number exhibited an increase in the critical flow regime. With growing roughness parameter the step in the curve became smaller. At transcritical flow conditions the Strouhal number was measured to be in the range of Sr = 0·25 ± 0·018 for all surface roughness tested. No regular vortex shedding could be observed in the critical flow range for the smooth cylinder with l/d = 3·38. When prolonging the test body to l/d = 6·75 the wake fluctuations became periodic.

Publisher Summary The decade of the 1950s saw great advances in heat-transfer measurement techniques. Optical methods became popular, along with several new heat-flux gages that are still in wide use today, as evidenced by the commercial heat-flux-gage manufacturers. In the last 10 to 20 years, a number of new techniques have been developed and applied, which have greatly increased the resolution and operating range of heat-flux instrumentation. Although the older methods are discussed as the background, the focus of this chapter is on the newer techniques and novel uses of the older techniques. In addition, an effort is made to bring together information from a variety of fields that deal with heat transfer, but that often isn't communicated. Three areas of new capability with important applications are time-resolved heat-flux measurements, simultaneous measurement of spatially distributed heat flux, and heat-flux measurement at high-temperature conditions. Examples of recent advances in these areas are discussed. Such new capabilities, when applied to real-world problems, make the field of heat transfer exciting. From these reviews, it is clear that no one gage or method is good for every application. The limitations of previous heat-flux-gage performance are highlighted and the need for better gage characteristics is expressed. Recent advances have been able to overcome some of these limitations and provide measurements with improved accuracy under conditions previously not possible. The discussion of measurement methods is organized by the first three categories of heat-transfer measurement categories, given in the chapter. Recent measurements using the methods discussed are showcased to demonstrate the advances made in measurement capability. Calibration is briefly addressed in the chapter.

Advances in Heat Flux Measurements

Convective heat transfer and pressure losses across novel heat sinks fabricated by Selective Laser Melting

A time-dependent numerical model of ice accretion on wires, such as overhead conductors, is presented. Simulations of atmospheric icing are made with the model in order to examine the dependence of the accreted ice amount on atmospheric conditions. The results show that in wet growth (glaze formation) under constant atmospheric conditions, the growth rate increases with time until the process changes to dry growth. In dry growth (rime formation) the growth rate typically increases with time at the beginning of the icing process, but later decreases with time when the ice deposit has grown bigger. The effect of air temperature on the ice load turns out to be rather small for the first 24 hours of icing in typical dry growth conditions, but it is important for long-term icing. The ultimate ice load may either increase or decrease with decreasing air temperature, depending on the other atmospheric conditions and on the duration of icing.
