Aircraft wings are a compromise that allows the aircraft to fly at a range of flight conditions, but the performance at each condition is sub-optimal. The ability of a wing surface to change its geometry during flight has interested researchers and designers over the years as this reduces the design compromises required. Morphing is the short form for metamorphose; however, there is neither an exact definition nor an agreement between the researchers about the type or the extent of the geometrical changes necessary to qualify an aircraft for the title ‘shape morphing.’ Geometrical parameters that can be affected by morphing solutions can be categorized into: planform alteration (span, sweep, and chord), out-of-plane transformation (twist, dihedral/gull, and span-wise bending), and airfoil adjustment (camber and thickness). Thin-walled shell structures like circular cylindrical shells are prone to buckling. Imperfections, which are defined as deviations from perfect shape and perfect loading distributions, can reduce the buckling load drastically compared to that of the perfect shell. Design criteria monographs like NASA-SP 8007 recommend that the buckling load of the perfect shell shall be reduced by using a knock-down factor. The existing knock-down factors are very conservative and do not account for the structural behaviour of composite shells. To determine an improved knock-down factor, several authors consider realistic shapes of shells in numerical simulations using probabilistic methods. Each manufacturing process causes a specific imperfection pattern; hence for this probabilistic approach a large number of test data is needed, which is often not available. Motivated by this lack of data, a new deterministic approach is presented for determining the lower bound of the buckling load of thin-walled cylindrical composite shells, which is derived from phenomenological test data. For the present test series, a single pre-buckle is induced by a radial perturbation load, before the axial displacement controlled loading starts. The deformations are measured using the prototype of a high-speed optical measurement system with a frequency up to 3680 Hz. The observed structural behaviour leads to a new reasonable lower bound of the buckling load. Based on test results, the numerical model is validated and the shell design is optimized by virtual testing. The results of test and numerical analysis indicate that this new approach has the potential to provide an improved and less conservative shell design in order to reduce weight and cost of thin-walled shell structures made from composite material.

: According to predictions of market researchers a large growth in numbers of passengers as well as of airfreight volume can be expected for the civil transport aircraft industry. This will lead to an increased competition between the aircraft manufacturers. To stay competitive it will be essential to improve the efficiency of the new aircraft generation. Especially the transonic wings of civil aircraft with their fixed geometry offer a large potential for improvement. Such fixed geometry wings are optimized for only one design point characterized by the parameters altitude, mach number and aircraft weight. Since these vary permanently during the mission of the aircraft the wing geometry is only seldom optimal. As aerodynamic investigations have shown one possibility to compensate for this major disadvantage lies in the chordwise and spanwise differential variation of the wing camber for mission duration. This paper describes the design of a flexible flap system for an adaptive wing to be used in civil transport aircraft that allows both a chordwise as well as a spanwise differential camber variation during flight. Since both lower and upper skins are flexed by active ribs, the camber variation is achieved with a smooth contour and without any additional gaps. This approach for varying the wing's camber is designed to be used for replacement and enhancement of a given flap system. In addition the kinematics of the rib structure allows for adaptation of the profile contour to different types of aerodynamic and geometric requirements.

Design Aspects of the Elastic Trailing Edge for an Adaptive Wing

Market research predicts, for the aircraft industry, a large growth in the number of passengers as well as the airfreight rate with the result of this leading to increased competition for the European aircraft industry, the efficiency of new aircraft has to be improved drastically. One approach, among others, is the aerodynamic optimization of the wing. The fixed wing is designed optimally only for one flight condition. This flight condition is described by the parameters altitude, mach number and aircraft weight, all of which permanently vary during the mission of the aircraft. Therefore, the aircraft is just periodically near to the chosen design point. To compensate for this major disadvantage, an `adaptive wing' for optimal adaptation and variation of the profile geometry to the actual flight conditions will be developed. Daimler-Benz Aerospace Airbus, Daimler-Benz Research and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are working as project partners on concepts for a variable camber and a local spoiler bump. In this paper a structural concept developed by the DLR for the adaptive spoiler will be presented. The concept is designed under the aspect of adaptive structural systems and requires a high integration of actuators, sensor and controllers in the structure. Special aspects of the design will be discussed and the first results, analytical, numerical as well as experimental, will be presented. Part of the concept design is also the development of new actuators optimized for the specific problem. A new actuator concept for the adaptive spoiler based on a cylindrical tube and activated either by pressure or multifunctional materials (e.g. shape memory alloys) will additionally be shown.
