Medicinal plants used in treatment and management of cancer in Kakamega County, Kenya

Complex microbial communities are known to exert significant influence over coral reef ecosystems. The Talang- Satang National Park is situated off the coast of Sematan and is one of the most diverse ecosystems found off-Sarawak. Interestingly, the Talang-talang reef thrives at above-average temperatures of 28- 30°C throughout the year. Through isolation and identification (16S rRNA) of native microbes from the coral, the surface mucus layer (SML), as well as the surrounding sediment and waters, we were able to determine the species composition and abundance of the culturable bacteria in the coral reef ecosystem. Isolates found attached to the coral are related mostly to Vibrio spp., presumably attached to the mucus from the water column and surrounding sediment. Pathogenic Vibrio spp. and Bacillus spp. were dominant amongst the isolates from the water column and sediment, while known coral pathogens responsible for coral bleaching, Vibrio coralliilyticus and Vibrio shiloi, were isolated from the coral SML and sediment samples respectively. Coral SML isolates were found to be closely related to known nitrogen fixers and antibiotic producers with tolerance towards elevated temperatures and heavy metal contamination, offering a possible explanation why the local corals are able to thrive in higher than usual temperatures. This specialized microbiota may be important for protecting the corals from pathogens by occupying entry niches and/or through the production of secondary metabolites such as antibiotics. The communities from the coral SML were tested against each other at 28, 30 and 32°C, and were also assessed for the presence of type I modular polyketides synthase (PKS) and non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) genes which are both involved in the production of antibiotic compounds. The bacterial community from the SML exhibited antimicrobial properties under normal temperatures while pathogenic strains appeared toxic at elevated temperatures and our results highlight the role of the coral SML bacterial community in the coral’s defence.

The Potential Roles of Bacterial Communities in Coral Defence: A Case Study at Talang-Talang Reef

Acacia ataxacantha (Fabaceae), used in traditional medicine grows in the South-West of Benin. Ethyl acetate extract of the barks of this species was previously reported to display various bioactivities, including antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant activities. In the present study, we investigate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of compound isolated from ethyl acetate extract of Acacia ataxacantha. Purification, isolation and structural identification of isolated compound were done using various chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Antimicrobial activity was investigated using a two-fold serial microdilution method. The inhibitory potency of isolated compound was evaluated by kinetic experiments. The antioxidant activity was also determined using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. The isolated compound was identified as 7-hydroxy-2-methyl-6-[β-galactopyranosyl-propyl]-4H-chromen-4-one. As far as we know, this compound, named “acthaside”, reported for the first time, was active against all tested microorganisms with minimal inhibitory concentration ranging from 25 to 50 μg/ml. At 50 μl/ml, no growth was observed in almost all tested microbial after 24 h of exposure. The isolated compound had significant antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 3.61 ± 0.12 μg/ml compared to quercetin (IC50 1.04 ± 0.01 μg/ml). The present work demonstrates that the new chromen derivative isolated from A. ataxacantha may help treat bacterial and yeast infections. However, further studies are required to clarify the mechanism of action of this compound.

Efficacy of some medicinal plants used in various parts of Kenya in treating selected bacterial and fungal pathogens

Kenya's vision 2030 partly aims at ensuring adequate health care for all, and the integration of traditional healthcare practices into the national healthcare system would present a more rapid alternative towards the realization of universal health coverage in Kenya. Currently, research on Kenyan medicinal plants with potential antibacterial activity remains vastly fragmented across numerous literature studies and databases; thus, it is imperative to collate and appraise these data for the ease of future research and possible clinical application. Objective. This review aims at exploring and compiling research evidence on medicinal plants used in the management of bacterial infections in Kenya, with a focus on their efficacy and safety. Methodology. A comprehensive web-based systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was executed to highlight the Kenyan medicinal plants used for the management of bacterial infections in Kenya. This review includes studies published until January 2021 from the PubMed, Science Direct, AJOL, and Google Scholar databases. Results. A total of 105 Kenyan medicinal plants belonging to 43 families have their in vitro activity against various human pathogenic bacteria evaluated. Plants from the Lamiaceae, Rutaceae, and Fabaceae families were the most commonly studied. Aloe secundiflora, Toddalia asiatica, Senna didymobotrya, Warbugia ugandensis, Tithonia diversifolia, Fuerstia africana, Olea africana, and Harrisonia abyssinica were the plants frequently evaluated within Kenya. The plants with the strongest antimicrobial activities were Toddalia asiatica, Hagenia abyssinica, Ocimum gratissimum, Harrisonia abyssinica, Senna didymobotrya, Olea Africana, Camellia sinensis, and Tarmarindus indica. Conclusion. Based on a published work, it is evident that traditional medicine is seemingly an acceptable and efficient system among Kenyan communities in the management of bacterial infections. Kenya's rich biodiversity with diverse secondary metabolites presents a promising source of new therapeutic alternatives with possibly different mechanisms of action against bacteria.

A Systematic Review of Medicinal Plants of Kenya used in the Management of Bacterial Infections

In recent years, drug resistance to human pathogenic bacteria and fungi has increasingly been reported all over the world (Levy and Marshall, 2004; WHO 2004). Consequently, the increasing prevalence of multidrugresistant strains of microorganisms raises an urgent need to search for new sources of antimicrobial agents (Sieradzki et al, 1999) alongside other strategies such as regulated and rational use of antibiotics (Hernandez, 2005).  The vast majority of traditionally used medicinal plants have not been adequately evaluated. This study was therefore undertaken to screen organic extracts obtained from three Kenyan medicinal plants for antibacterial and antifungal activity as a basis for further phytochemical studies. The plants to be studied were selected on the basis of ethnopharmacological reports of their use in traditional medicine; this approach is generally considered effective in the discovery of new bioactive agents from higher plants (Kloucek et al, 2005).
