Life on the Screen is a fascinating and wide-ranging investigation of the impact of computers and networking on society, peoples' perceptions of themselves, and the individual's relationship to machines. Sherry Turkle, a Professor of the Sociology of Science at MIT and a licensed psychologist, uses Internet MUDs (multi-user domains, or in older gaming parlance multi-user dungeons) as a launching pad for explorations of software design, user interfaces, simulation, artificial intelligence, artificial life, agents, "bots," virtual reality, and "the on-line way of life." 
Turkle's discussion of postmodernism is particularly enlightening. She shows how postmodern concepts in art, architecture, and ethics are related to concrete topics much closer to home, for example AI research (Minsky's "Society of Mind") and even MUDs (exemplified by students with X-window terminals who are doing homework in one window and simultaneously playing out several different roles in the same MUD in other windows). Those of you who have (like me) been turned off by the shallow, pretentious, meaningless paintings and sculptures that litter our museums of modern art may have a different perspective after hearing what Turkle has to say. 
This is a psychoanalytical book, not a technical one. However, software developers and engineers will find it highly accessible because of the depth of the author's technical understanding and credibility. Unlike most other authors in this genre, Turkle does not constantly jar the technically-literate reader with blatant errors or bogus assertions about how things work. Although I personally don't have time or patience for MUDs,view most of AI as snake-oil, and abhor postmodern architecture, I thought the time spent reading this book was an extremely good investment.

Urbanism, as the term is used in this chapter, refers to a cultural milieu found throughout societies, in places both urban and rural. A common sentiment of cultural urbanism is urban cosmopolitan chauvinism—in which cities are felt to be and expressed as sites of diversity, modernity, progress, wealth, and in other ways positively valued. In contrast, the rural as urbanism’s other and rural people are cast as backward, unsophisticated, homogeneous, conservative, poor, and otherwise lacking in various ways. Through such imaginings, cultural urbanism creates subaltern rural identities. This chapter examines how such subaltern rural identities provide discursive grounds for political action and mobilization. It compares four cases—Malaysia, America, China, and Thailand. Each of these has very different cultures of urbanism and diverse political systems. Nevertheless, the politics of rural identity can be seen as playing a role in national politics—even if this role is often not made very explicit in political analysis or political discourse within each country.

Urban Cosmopolitan Chauvinism and the Politics of Rural Identity

In 2007, a survey - the first of its kind - was carried out to gauge young people's awareness of and attitudes towards ASEAN, following the decision by ASEAN heads of state and government to accelerate the date for accomplishing an integrated ASEAN Community by 2015 Views and attitudes from university undergraduates in the ten ASEAN member states who participated in the survey indicated a nascent sense of identification as citizens of the region as well as their priorities for important aspects of regional integration An update to the 2007 survey was carried out in 2014-15 among the same target population but with an expanded scope of twenty-two universities and institutes of higher learning across the ten member states In the updated survey, we found that there are more ASEAN-positive attitudes region-wide, but there are also increases in ASEAN-ambivalent attitudes at country-level in some ASEAN members Young people's priorities for important aspects of regional integration have also shifted away from economic cooperation to tourism and development cooperation New questions in the latest survey also allow us to demonstrate the descriptive vocabulary and cognitive maps students hold for the region and its nations This book details the key findings of the updated survey compared to the earlier survey These include nation-by-nation results and a summary of region-wide trends, as well as what they suggest for the prospects of ASEAN integration beyond 2015 These are assessed in a chapter providing broad recommendations for policymakers and educators in the ASEAN member states

Do Young People Know ASEAN? Update of a Ten-nation Survey

Biasanya teknologi Internet dianggap sebagai alat teknologi informasi namun artikel ini mengemukakan isu-isu sosial dan budaya yang diadopsi oleh para akademisi di Indonesia. Selain isu-isu biaya, bandwidth , dan infrastruktur, perangkat Internet dibentuk, diperlambat, atau dipercepat oleh kebudayaan institusional serta persepsi teknologi itu. Institusi-institusi akademi di Indonesia, adopsi teknologi Internet bertahan dengan isu-isu pembangunan dan distribusi sosial sumber daya yang terbatas sebagai obyek-obyek status, serta hirarki dalam pengambilan keputusan. Lebih jauh, tulisan ini berpendapat bahwa perhatian terhadap isu-isu adopsi dan penggunaan teknologi internet dalam dunia akademik di Indonesia dapat menyadarkan kita akan isu-isu yang lebih luas tentang interaksi antara teknologi internet dan konteks sosial budayanya di masa depan, seperti halnya terjadi di Asia Tenggara dan wilayah lain.
