Industry funding and university professors' research performance

This paper argues that knowledge mapping may provide a fruitful avenue for intellectual capital management in academic environments such as university departments. However, while some research has been conducted on knowledge mapping and intellectual capital management in the public sector, the university has so far not been directly considered for this type of management. The paper initially reviews the functions and techniques of knowledge mapping and assesses these in the light of academic demands. Second, the result of a focus group study is presented, where academic leaders were asked to reflect of the uses of knowledge mapping at their departments and institutes. Finally a number of suggestions are made as to the rationale and conduct of knowledge mapping in academe.

Prometheus Bound: science in a dynamic steady state

The management of a research project is full of uncertainty and complexity. Research has substantial elements of creativity and innovation and predicting the outcome of research in full is therefore very difficult. In addition, the relationship between the research project manager and the project participants is characterised by an asymmetric distribution of knowledge where individual researchers know a lot more about the potential – negative and positive – of their research contributions than the project manager does. Furthermore, researchers in a project may have many competing demands on their time and they may find themselves competing against each other for individual scientific priority or the right to patent a research result. Given these and other inherent difficulties of managing a research project this paper addresses two questions in particular: 1) What kind of guidance may a research project manager get from existing project management literature? 2) What kinds of changes or additions are needed to build a project management model for research? In dealing with these questions the paper gives an outline of some of the basic tools and assumptions of existing project management theory and compares these to conditions in research. Based on this, the paper discusses the task of the research project manager and the interpersonal dynamics of a research team with a view to giving some pointers to what a research project manager can do to create the best possible conditions for a successful research project.

This paper argues the need for a new approach to the management of academic researchers and their research work. It is held that the requirement for a new management paradigm at the universities is accentuated by all the significant challenges in the knowledge production system (described as mode 2, triple helix, post-academic science and so on). The paper also sketches an outline of an approach to micro-level management of academic researchers, which seeks to strike a balance between autonomy for the academics and organisational steering. Managing University Research In the Triple Helix

Using the Mertonian ethos of science as the point of departure this paper discusses the norms of science in the light of the rapid changes which are taking place in contemporary research (e.g. described by Gibbons et al. (1994) and by Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff (2000). In conclusion, the paper attempts to relate the discussion about scientific norms to the discussions about research management and research policy and provides some examples from Denmark illustrating that Danish academic institutions are undergoing significant changes, which increasingly make their conditions resemble those of research institutions outside the academic sector.
