The Art of Multiprocessor Programming

Ten years ago, I introduced the notion of user interface plasticity to denote the capacity of user interfaces to adapt, or to be adapted, to the context of use while preserving usability. The Model Driven Engineering (MDE) approach, which was used for user interface generation since the early eighties in HCI, has recently been revived to address this complex problem. Although MDE has resulted in interesting and convincing results for conventional WIMP user interfaces, it has not fully demonstrated its theoretical promises yet. In this paper, we discuss how to push MDE to the limit in order to reconcile high-level modeling techniques with low-level programming in order to go beyond WIMP user interfaces.

User Interface Plasticity: Model Driven Engineering to the Limit!

Energy consumption has emerged as a first class computing resource for both server systems and personal computing devices. The growing importance of energy has led to rethink in hardware design, hypervisors, operating systems and compilers. Algorithm design is still relatively untouched by the importance of energy and algorithmic complexity models do not capture the energy consumed by an algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new complexity model to account for the energy used by an algorithm. Based on an abstract memory model (which was inspired by the popular DDR3 memory model and is similar to the parallel disk I/O model of Vitter and Shriver), we present a simple energy model that is a (weighted) sum of the time complexity of the algorithm and the number of 'parallel' I/O accesses made by the algorithm. We derive this simple model from a more complicated model that better models the ground truth and present some experimental justification for our model. We believe that the simplicity (and applicability) of this energy model is the main contribution of the paper. We present some sufficient conditions on algorithm behavior that allows us to bound the energy complexity of the algorithm in terms of its time complexity (in the RAM model) and its I/O complexity (in the I/O model). As corollaries, we obtain energy optimal algorithms for sorting (and its special cases like permutation), matrix transpose and (sparse) matrix vector multiplication.

Analysis for the design of open applications on mobile devices

One of the main features of mobile applications is that its development should be focused on the user. For this reason the design of graphical interfaces must be usable, efficient and effective, among other properties of HCI. The acceptance of mobile applications and the device are affected by personality, cognitive abilities (memory, spatial ability and verbal ability), age, and experience in mobile technology by users. Even if there are methods and techniques to design graphics user interfaces, there is a limited styles for the interfaces for mobile applications. The proliferation of mobile devices has generated the emergence of various platforms. This variety of mobile platforms there has generated a several set of widgets. However, this set of widgets is not cross-platform. That is to say, not all widgets are available on all platforms. Developers have the problem that must generate native applications that have the same level of usability between different platforms or to generate cross-platforms applications that comply with the HCI properties: usability, effectiveness and efficiency. Moreover, if we want to achieve applications to automatically adapt its GUI to the mobile platform (OS and device), requires some equivalence between the widgets on each platform and also, you should know the styles of organization of widgets for each platform. One solution to this problem is to have usability equivalences between different widgets for each mobile platform. We propose the equivalence of widgets with two properties: functionality and usability. Possibly the most important widget sets are related to the navigation of mobile applications. In this paper we present an overview of the widgets of the main mobile platforms and a taxonomy of them. It also presents the study of some equivalences in widgets that allow navigation in mobile applications.

Equivalence of Navigation Widgets for Mobile Platforms

Specialist in mental health and neuropsychology apply tests to patients to evaluate impairment level of people cortical functions. Luria tests are designed to treat defects caused by local lesions that may affect the higher functions of the man. In particular, Luria test study the memory and intellectual processes. An application of Luria test is determinate the level of memory impairment. An example of suffers of memory impairment are older adults. The application efficiency of Luria memory tests in older adults decreases owing to biological factor such as inability moving to place of performance testing. In addition, there are a great demand for health services compared with the number specialist capable of addressing mental deterioration. This increases the complexity of control and monitoring patients. A solution for the problem of application efficiency of Luria tests is a digital implementation of the Luria tests on mobile devices, taking advantages of the characteristic of mobile computing. This solution requires an analysis of the Luria memory tests considerate the HCI factors, the different mobile interfaces, the elements of interaction of mobile devices and in the case study of older adults, the special considerations for this kind of people.

Analysis of Luria Memory Tests for Development on Mobile Devices

In High Performance Computing, energy consump-tion is becoming an important aspect to consider. Due to the high costs that represent energy production in all countries it holds an important role and it seek to find ways to save energy. It is reflected in some efforts to reduce the energy requirements of hardware components and applications. Some options have been appearing in order to scale down energy use and, con-sequently, scale up energy efficiency. One of these strategies is the multithread programming paradigm, whose purpose is to produce parallel programs able to use the full amount of computing resources available in a microprocessor. That energy saving strategy focuses on efficient use of multicore processors that are found in various computing devices, like mobile devices. Actually, as a growing trend, multicore processors are found as part of various specific purpose computers since 2003, from High Performance Computing servers to mobile devices. However, it is not clear how multiprogramming affects energy efficiency. This paper presents an analysis of different types of multicore-based architectures used in computing, and then a valid model is presented. Based on Amdahl’s Law, a model that considers different scenarios of energy use in multicore architectures it is proposed. Some interesting results were found from experiments with the developed algorithm, that it was execute of a parallel and sequential way. A lower limit of energy consumption was found in a type of multicore architecture and this behavior was observed experimentally.

Energy consumption model over parallel programs implemented on multicore architectures

The use of high resolution tiled display has become popular in the scientific community. User interaction with these devices depends on the hardware configuration and the software in use. The variety of hardware configurations and software generates various types of execution modes and interaction in the tiled display, this diversity has resulted in not having a standard for human computer interaction. This paper shows the results of the interaction between users and the tiled display using the Kinect©. The results help us find improvements in hardware configurations of this arrays of displays, applications design and try to find standards in defining user-defined motion gestures.
