It is shown that the problem of finding a p-median of a network is an $NP$-hard problem even when the network has a simple structure (e.g., planar graph of maximum vertex degree 3). However, results leading to efficient algorithms are presented when the network is a tree: In particular, we first show that a 1-median of a tree is identical to its w-centroid, and obtain Goldman’s $O(n)$ algorithm for finding a 1-median of a tree out of more general considerations. Then, we present an algorithm which finds a p-median of a tree (for $p > 1$) in time $O(n^2 \cdot p^2 )$.

An Algorithmic Approach to Network Location Problems. II: The p-Medians

Gossiping and broadcasting are two problems of information dissemination described for a group of individuals connected by a communication network. In gossiping every person in the network knows a unique item of information and needs to communicate it to everyone else. In broadcasting one individual has an item of information which needs to be communicated to everyone else. We review the results that have been obtained on these and related problems.

A survey of gossiping and broadcasting in communication networks

This paper describes a general technique that can be used to obtain approximation schemes for various NP-complete problems on planar graphs. The strategy depends on decompos- ing a planar graph into subgraphs of a form we call k-outerplanar. For fixed k, the problems of interest are solvable optimally in linear time on k-outerplanar graphs by dynamic programming. For general planar graphs, if the problem is a maximization problem, such as maximum independent set, this technique gives for each k a linear time algorithm that produces a solution whose size is at least k/(k + 1)optimal. If the problem is a minimization problem, such as minimum vertex cover, it gives for each k a linear time algorithm that produces a solution whose size is at most (k + 1)/k optimal. Taking k = (c log log nl or k = (c log nl, where n is the number of nodes and c is some constant, we get polynomial time approximation algorithms whose solution sizes converge toward optimal as n increases. The class of problems for which this approach provides approximation schemes includes maximum independent set, maximum tile salvage, partition into triangles, maximum H-matching, minimum vertex cover, minimum dominat- ing set, and minimum edge dominating set. For these and certain other problems, the proof of solvability on k-outerplanar graphs also enlarges the class of planar gmphs for which the problems are known to be solvable in polynomial time.

Approximation algorithms for NP-complete problems on planar graphs

We present data which, to the best of our knowledge, includes all known nontrivial values and bounds for specific graph, hypergraph and multicolor Ramsey numbers, where the avoided graphs are complete or complete without one edge. Many results pertaining to other more studied cases are also presented. We give references to all cited bounds and values, as well as to previous similar compilations. We do not attempt complete coverage of asymptotic behavior of Ramsey numbers, but concentrate on their specific values.

Small Ramsey Numbers

We give a survey up to 1989 on the Steiner tree problems which include the four important cases of euclidean, rectilinear, graphic, phylogenetic and some of their generalizations. We also provide a rather comprehensive and up-to-date bibliography which covers more than three hundred items.

A set D of vertices of a finite, undirected graph G = (V, E) is a total dominating set if every vertex of V is adjacent to some vertex of D. In this paper we initiate the study of total dominating sets in graphs and, in particular, obtain results concerning the total domination number of G (the smallest number of vertices in a total dominating set) and the total domatic number of G (the largest order of a partition of G into total dominating sets).

A vertex x in a subset X of vertices of an undericted graph is redundant if its closed neighbourhood is contained in the union of closed neighborhoods of vertices of X – {x}. In the context of a communications network, this means that any vertex that may receive communications from X may also be informed from X – {x}. The irredundance number ir (G) is the minimum cardinality taken over all maximal sets of vertices having no redundancies. The domination number γ(G) is the minimum cardinality taken over all dominating sets of G, and the independent domination number i(G) is the minimum cardinality taken over all maximal independent sets of vertices of G. The paper contians results that relate these parameters. For example, we prove that for any graph G, ir (G) > γ(G)/2 and for any grpah Gwith p vertices and no isolated vertices, i(G) ≤ p-γ(G) + 1 - ⌈(p - γ(G))/γ(G)⌉.

Graph‐theoretic parameters concerning domination, independence, and irredundance

In large organizations there is frequently a need to pass information from one place, e.g., the president’s office or company headquarters, to all other divisions, departments or employees. This is often done along organizational reporting lines. Insofar as most organizations are structured in a hierarchical or treelike fashion, this can be described as a process of information dissemination in trees. In this paper we present an algorithm which determines the amount of time required to pass, or to broadcast, a unit of information from an arbitrary vertex to every other vertex in a tree. As a byproduct of this algorithm we determine the broadcast center of a tree, i.e., the set of all vertices from which broadcasting can be accomplished in the least amount of time. It is shown that the subtree induced by the broadcast center of a tree is always a star with two or more vertices.
