Journal ArticleDOI
Worldwide Ethnic Distribution of the G Protein β3 Subunit 825T Allele and Its Association with Obesity in Caucasian, Chinese, and Black African Individuals
Winfried Siffert,Peter Forster,Karl-Heinz Jöckel,David A. Mvere,Bernd Brinkmann,Christoph Naber,Robert Crookes,Anthon du P. Heyns,Jörg T. Epplen,Joy Fridey,Barry I. Freedman,Norbert Müller,Dietmar Stolke,Arya M. Sharma,Khalaf Al Moutaery,Hans Grosse-Wilde,Bettina Buerbaum,Tanja Ehrlich,Hakimuddin Razi Ahmad,Bernhard Horsthemke,Ernette D. du Toit,Anja Tiilikainen,Junbo Ge,Yulin Wang,Dongliang Yang,Johannes Hüsing,Dieter Rosskopf +26 more
TL;DR: BP values in young male whites increased significantly with increasing BMI values but were independent of the C825T polymorphism, suggesting that hypertension associated with the 825T allele could be a consequence of obesity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Five novel missense mutations of the Lewis gene (FUT3) in African (Xhosa) and caucasian populations in South Africa
Hao Pang,Yuhua Liu,Yoshiro Koda,Mikiko Soejima,Jingtao Jia,T. Schlaphoff,Ernette D. du Toit,Hiroshi Kimura +7 more
TL;DR: The determination of α(1,3/1,4)fucosyltransferase activity, after transfection of plasmids containing the new alleles into COS7 cells, suggested that alleles le484,667 and le484-667,808 encoded an inactive enzyme, and that allele Le304 and Le370 encoded a functional enzyme.
Journal ArticleDOI
The use of short tandem repeat polymorphisms for monitoring chimerism following bone marrow transplantation: a short report
TL;DR: Preliminary results show peripheral blood cells used in the short tandem repeat (STR) assay to serially characterise the haematologic course and so evaluate the usefulness of this system to be a useful additional tool in monitoring post-transplant engraftment.
Journal ArticleDOI
The plasminogen polymorphism in South African Negro populations: genetics and anthropogenetics.
TL;DR: A striking difference in PLG allele distribution between Negroes from South Africa and published Negroid frequencies from North America could be observed and was also seen in comparison with Mongoloid populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.
TL;DR: In 1939 Osgood et al. reported infusing bone marrow into patients with severe aplastic anaemia without any clinical benefit, and in 1957 Donnall Thomas and co-workers showed that marrow can be collected, stored in significant quantities and safely administered.
