Clues to the chronology of Old Germanic loans in Romanian and in other South-East European languages The present article is directly based on the handout of the talk this author gave at the International Conference on Balkan Linguistics (6-7 May, 2013, Torun, Nicolaus Copernicus University); therefore the subchapters and paragraphs observe the arrangement of the materials included in that handout. The first part contains a chronological table that reflects mainstream archaeological-historical information regarding the history of military-political actions and achievements of the Old Germanic populations in south-east Europe between the 3 rd century BC and the 6 th century of our era. Then concrete textual proofs follow, which are chronologically arranged and briefly commented upon. Finally, the author proposes interdisciplinary approaches based mainly on reference of linguistic features to historical stages and evolutions. W dalszej cześci przytoczono i krotko skomentowano uporządkowane chronologicznie konkretne dowody jezykowe. Na koncu znajduje sie propozycja interdyscyplinarnego podejścia do tematu, oparta glownie na odniesieniu cech jezykowych do odpowiednich etapow historii i ewolucji jezykowej.

This paper explores possible connections between the Indo-European roots *yem-/*jem- and *am- (*me-) and the Etruscan stem am- through the analysis and reconstruction of the pre-Latin etymology of the Italian placename Imola (Bologna, Emilia-Romagna). The evaluation of plausible links between Indo-European (Italic and, especially, Celtic) and Etruscan in this area, in the specific field of historical toponomastics, could allow relevant considerations inherently in the notions of reuse and refunctionalization of roots pertaining to different languages and linguistic families in the (mainly Prehistoric or Proto-historic) toponymy of border areas. The placename Imola is, therefore, reconstructed through a “convergent” methodology that takes into account the possibility of different and heterogeneous influences in the naming process. Linguistic Contact in Prehistoric Italy: At The Origins of the Placename Imola

Abstract This article aims to bridge existing scholarship on Gothic and early Ibero-Romance phonology by examining the adaptation of Visigothic loanwords in Hispano- and Luso-Romance. There are considerable challenges in establishing Visigothic provenance for an Ibero-Romance word, which are due to recognized indeterminacies in the history of the Gothic language and peoples, as well as the deceptively stable Latin textual record of the early Middle Ages. Nevertheless, an updated survey of putative Gothic loanwords and their adaptation in Ibero-Romance reveals definite patterns and yields important information about the changing pronunciation of Ibero-Romance, as well as the pronunciation of Visigothic, at the time of borrowing.

Gothic Loanwords in Spanish and Portuguese: Evidence for Sounds and Sound Changes

1 and for the post-ancient history of Southeast-Central Europe, as the ban family of words, to be found in Romanian and in several neighbouring languages. 2 It may now appear as quite surprising that no one has proposed Old Germanic origins for those ban cognates. Such a situation was, in my opinion, caused by the fact that some earlier etymological explanations regarding the ban family were considered to be definitive solutions, so they became a kind of "etymological legends" transmitted from author to author until the present day. Those legends encouraged a perpetuation of confusing references and missing links, which could have been solved by new approaches to otherwise well-recorded lexical materials.

Historical Implications of a Romanian Lexical Family of Old Germanic Origin (ban, bănat, băni, bănui, bântui)

The treatment with señor, a possible Germanism?

The aim of the present study is to show the origin of the almost pan-romanic honorific treatment developed from SENIORE ‘older’ (Spanish señor). Its use, closely linked to the imposition of a new social model of Germanic origin, the feudalism, and the data extracted from a wide range of Medieval Latin texts and those that provide the first documentation on Iberian soil provide radiable evidence that it may be treated as a Germanism.
