Journal ArticleDOI

The enzymatic oxidation of pyridoxine and pyridoxamine phosphates.

TL;DR: In the course of these investigations, a simple photometric method has been developed for the determination of pyridoxal or pyrIDoxal S-phosphate in enzymatic reaction mixtures and it is concluded that the two enzymes are probably identical.
Book ChapterDOI

Chemical structure in relation to biological activities of vitamin B6.

TL;DR: This chapter examines some of the questions about structural features required for vitamin B6 activity in living organisms and what chemical features determine the ability of the coenzyme to participate in catalysis of the reactions for which it is essential.
Journal ArticleDOI

Properties of Crystalline Tryptophanase

TL;DR: Wood, Gunsalus, and Umbreit showed that tryptophanase catalyzed the stoichiometric conversion of tryptophile to indole, pyruvate, and ammonia and required pyridoxal 5-phosphate as a cofactor.
Journal ArticleDOI

The relation of spectral changes and tritium exchange reactions to the mechanism of tryptophanase-catalyzed reactions.

TL;DR: Results show that the β elimination reaction per se is the rate-limiting step in the holotryptophanase reactions, and support fully the mechanism shown in Equation 1.
