ABSTRACT This study investigates how local culture sharing and altruistic values from the elderly affect satisfaction levels with travel and life satisfaction via tourism product selection. Stratified random sampling is used in this study, we invited 1,000 qualified elderly tourists to participate in the survey from hot spring areas in Taiwan. We received 242 usable responses and that was fully completed questionnaires. Our research analysis and hypotheses were evaluated with partial least squares (PLS) modeling using SPSS and SmartPLS software. The findings of the study point out the elderly look forward to vacationing with other members to enjoy the local values of wellness tourism at tourist destinations, the service providers provide suitable and special tourism products to attract elderly tourists. Likewise, hoteliers, will provide more fun facilities for the elderly; marketers of travel agencies can emphasize the fun of wellness tourism with advertising icons; therefore, a happy travel experience contributes to the dignity and quality of life of the elderly.

Wellness Tourism Enhances Elderly Life Satisfaction

Destination loyalty is a key indicator of the competitiveness of tourist destinations. Rural summer health leisure vacations for urban elderly (RSHLVUE) tourists span a wide range of ages. Destination operators need to understand the loyalty formation mechanisms of different aged tourists. RSHLVUE tourists were divided into a low-aged group (LA) and a high-aged group (HA) to examine and modify the hypothesis of the relationship between perceived value, tourist well-being, place attachment, and destination loyalty based on affect, behavior, and cognition (ABC) theory. The test results of the measurement model indicate that the HA showed stronger responses in terms of cost value, sense of meaning, and place dependency. The formation mechanism of destination loyalty for the LA is tourist well-being → perceived value → place attachment → destination loyalty, and for the HA is perceived value → tourist well-being → place attachment → destination loyalty. The findings deepen the understanding of destination loyalty among elderly leisure vacation tourists and can guide RSHLVUE destination managers to enhance destination competitiveness.

ABSTRACT Rural summer health tourism for the urban elderly (RSHTUE) is developing in China. RSHTUE tourists are predominantly urban elderly who stay in the countryside for a long time during the summer. This study first obtained the initial dimensions and item lists of the RSHTUE tourist well-being scale from the literature and interview data. Then, the expert panel method was applied to determine the initial scale. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted to obtain an 8D 28-item RSHTUE tourist well-being scale. This scale can be used to support subsequent theoretical studies and guide the RSHTUE's development practice.
