Karl Buhler (1879-1963) was one of the leading theoreticians of language of this century. His masterwork Sprachtheorie (1934) has been praised widely and gained considerable recognition in the fields of linguistics, semiotics, the philosophy of language and the psychology of language. The work has, however, resisted translation into English partly because of its spirited and vivid style, partly because of the depth and range of analysis, partly because of the great erudition of the author, who displays a thorough command of both the linguistic and the philosophical traditions. With this translation, Buhler's ideas on many problems that are still controversial and others only recently rediscovered, are now accessible to the English-speaking world.Contents: The work is divided into four parts. Part I discusses the four “axioms” or principles of language research, the most famous of which is the first, the “organon model”, the base of Buhler's instrumental view of language. Part II treats the role of indexicality in language and discusses deixis as one determinant of speech. Part III examines the symbolic field, dealing with context, onomatopoeia and the function of case. La ligne directrice du present travail participe pour l'essentiel de la semantique onomastique. Les fondements de la semantique cognitive propriale reposent, dans les recherches en linguistique, sur l'hypothese que l'unite onomastique a deja inevitablement perdu sa singularite. Or, si les Npr constituent des signes monoreferentiels lorsqu'ils sont employes en discours, l'approche lexicologique conduit precisement a les contextualiser, en montrant comment leur contenu se construit par des determinations successives qui permettent autant de propagations de semes par afference. Les Npr relevant des domaines culturels francais, russe, anglais et allemand, et par ailleurs reperes dans les dictionnaires lexicographiques, font l'objet de notre recherche. Le sujet de l'etude est la semantique des onymes dans les micro- et macrocontextes, et leur interpretation en fonction des connaissances de l'allocutaire. L'objectif principal est de decrire les associations que l'onoma evoque chez les franco-, russo-, anglo- et germanophones, et par la, de determiner comment les Npr sont utilises, selon les conventions linguistico-discursives, en tant que stereotypes culturels. Nous avons en particulier exploite les theories des onomasticiens russes sur la problematique de l'unite propriale et de sa semantique. L'objectif fixe dans cette these est egalement de reveler les differents degres de « propritude » et de « communitude » des Npr recategorises, et l'evolution des Npr a referent stereotype. On admet que la signification non assertive de ces unites referentiellement modifiees est constituee, de facon associative, par des representations. Reconnaitre la nature de ces representations, c'est essayer de comprendre les processus cognitifs mis en jeu pour qu'une telle entite onymique puisse s'inscrire (d'un point de vue logique et semantiquement) dans le discours.

In this note, we will focus on the translation of the neological term properhood from English into French. Since the 2000s, British Professor Richard Coates formulated a new theory of “properhood”. The term in question was coined to designate the property of a lexeme to be a proper name. We associate the notion of proprialité thereto, i.e. the ability for a term to be singular and not common, and we argue the translation of properhood with that expression.

Cet article souhaite contribuer a la reflexion sur la circulation du nom propre dans les textes. Il s'agit des exemples qui supposent une recategorisation, puisqu'il y a changement de classe grammaticale, par "derivation impropre": nom propre → nom commun. On peut donc parler d'un nom propre recategorise. Nous visons a demontrer que la circulation du nom propre recategorise, informative et associative par sa nature, favorise la formation du mecanisme de l'allusion. Au cours de la circulation, le nom personnel, en tant qu'unite lexicale, entre dans la classe des noms de l'individu ; en discours, il etablit une etroite correlation avec la personne designee. C'est une sorte de figement. Le stereotype circulant est non seulement stabilisation mais aussi “travail” en texte d'une identite collective qui se confronte a l'alterite d'un heritage qui est hermeneutique avant d'etre culturel.

Dans la communication nous comparons les modifications des noms propres entre les langues russe et francaise. Au depart nous decodons brievement ce que nous entendons sous le terme « nom propre modifie », qui est pourtant assez connu et fort discute. Les noms propres peuvent subir tout un eventail de modifications : grammaticalisation, verbalisation, adjectivation, adverbialisation, metaphorisation, metonymisation, communisation, generalisation, particularisation, depropriation, desemantisation, appellativisation, perte de majuscule, affixation, flexion, forme diminutive, forme hypocoristique, etc. Toutes ces positions sont confrontees et analysees a l'exemple des litteratures francaise, russe et anglaise (traduite en russe et francais respectivement).
