A generalized hydrodynamic theory is developed for systems of interacting Brownian particles on the basis of a Fokker-Planck equation General results are derived for correlation functions, frequency- and wave-vector dependent transport coefficients Explicit expressions for moments, cumulants and the hydrodynamic limits of the transport coefficients are given For the special cases of overdamped systems with and without hydrodynamic interaction the general results are simplified As an example for the application of this approach the system of charged spherical polystyrene spheres in aqueous solution is treated in detail The generalized transport functions are evaluated in mode-mode coupling approximation and detailed numerical results are presented for various collective and single-particle properties Finally, the relationship to a corresponding Smoluchowski approach is discussed

Generalized hydrodynamics of systems of Brownian particles

Modern techniques of liquid state physics have been successfully used to probe the microscopic structure and dynamics of a variety of multicomponent liquids in which relative ordering of the species is present near freezing. The alkali halides are prototypes for this specific type of short-range order in relation to the nature of bonding, but the systems in question also include other monovalent and polyvalent metal-ion halides, alkali-based intermetallic compounds and chalcogen-based alloys. A viewpoint is taken in this review which gives attention to the relations between liquid and solid phase properties across melting for compound systems at stoichiometric composition. In addition, large deviations for stoichiometry can be realised in the liquid phase, to display trends of evolution of structure, bonding and electronic states with composition.

Structure and dynamics of molten salts

From aqueous liquid electrolytes for lithium–air cells to ionic liquid electrolytes that permit continuous, high-rate cycling of secondary batteries comprising metallic lithium anodes, we show that many of the key impediments to progress in developing next-generation batteries with high specific energies can be overcome with cleaver designs of the electrolyte. When these designs are coupled with as cleverly engineered electrode configurations that control chemical interactions between the electrolyte and electrode or by simple additives-based schemes for manipulating physical contact between the electrolyte and electrode, we further show that rechargeable battery configurations can be facilely designed to achieve desirable safety, energy density and cycling performance.

Structure and Charge Distribution in DNA and Poly(styrenesulfonate) Aqueous Solutions

The self-diffusion and interdiffusion of the two ionic species in binary mixtures of point ions immersed in a uniform neutralizing background are analyzed on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations over a wide range of couplings. The autocorrelation function associated with interdiffusion is well approximated by a well-defined linear combination of the two velocity autocorrelation functions. The results are then used to determine the plasmon frequency and lifetime in the long wavelength limit. While the frequency of the infinite wavelength plasmon mode rises only slowly with coupling above the usual kinetic plasma frequency, collisional damping turns out to be very important at strong couplings.
