This paper presents an exhaustive survey of the literature over the past 25 years discussing the process of self-excitation and voltage buildup, modeling, steady-state, and transient analysis, reactive power control methods, and parallel operation of SEIG.

Model-Based Predictive Control of Electric Drives

Self-excited induction generators (SEIGs) are increasingly being used in small-capacity isolated applications for harnessing both conventional and renewable energy resources. These SEIGs suffer from poor voltage regulation even when driven by constant speed prime movers or fixed head hydro turbines. The suitability of these SEIGs to regulate the terminal voltage is a key factor in deciding its use in various applications. This paper deals with the voltage-regulating (VR) schemes for SEIGs, which are found scattered in the literature, and summarizes their operational aspects and relative suitability. These VR schemes are classified on the basis of shunt and series compensation as classical schemes, schemes based on solid-state switching devices, and schemes based on self-commutating solid-state switching device converters. The recommendations drawn from this study are helpful in developing a new cost-effective regulating scheme of SEIGs for different industrial applications.

A Prospective on Voltage Regulation of Self-Excited Induction Generators for Industry Applications

Smart modulation: a new approach to power converter control

A valid solution to the problem of feeding remote loads, that cannot be linked to the mains for economic reasons, is given by the use of wind energy. These plants, using self-excited induction generators, connected to a battery by an AC-DC power converter, present several advantages, such as robustness, small need of maintenance, low cost of the machine and intrinsic safety, thanks to the self-excitation phenomenon. The aim of the present paper is the comparative analysis of two different power conversion topologies: in one case a full-controlled thyristor bridge is employed; in the other, a diode bridge feeding a chopper is used. Having discussed the wind speeds selection criteria, some equivalent models for steady-state sinusoidal operation are developed, of basic importance for the design. The operating characteristics obtained by numerical analysis are then shown and discussed.

Performance comparison among different converters fed by self excited wind driven induction generators

The paper presents an experimental comparison of two sensorless control schemes: natural field orientation; and stator flux oriented vector control. The final target of this research is the determination of a suitable scheme for implementation in low cost platforms. In order to consider an industrial application of the sensorless drive in a wide set of fields, the implementation is performed using standard microncontrollers instead of DSPs.
