The paper begins with the work of various pioneers in the use of the optical spark up to the early 1920s. These include Fox Talbot, Mach, Cranz, Boyes, Worthington and Bull amongst others. Mention is made of some of their ingenious solutions for problems of triggering and the problems to which they applied spark photography. These efforts began with single exposures and gradually turned to various multiple spark systems in order to incorporate a time history into their observations. There follows descriptions of spark source types, their backing circuitry, optical properties, general usage, later advances and applications including their use in aeroballistic ranges. Finally spark source advantages and disadvantages are compared.

Die in der Stromungsmestechnik benutzten optischen Verfahren sind im wesentlichen das Schatten-und Schlierenverfahren sowie das Rauchfadenverfahren. Fur punktuelle Messungen steht das Laser-Doppler-Anemometer als Mesprinzip zur Verfugung. Auch das Interferenzverfahren wird gelegentlich fur quantitative Druckverteilungen angewandt. Bei den Schatten- und Schlierenverfahren wird ein Impulslichtstrahl durch das zu untersuchende Medium uber einen genau geschliffenen spharischen Schlierenspiegel in die Abbildungskamera gelenkt. Allen diesen Verfahren haftet der Nachteil an, das man fur quantitative Erfassung den Stromungsvorgang so praparieren mus, das moglichst nur eine geometrisch beschrankte Ebene optisch erfast wird. Eine dreidimensionale Analyse ist mit dem Laser-Doppler-Verfahren punktuell moglich, aber aufwendig. Eine dreidimensionale Erfassung von Stromungen ist auch mit dem Rauchfadenprinzip moglich, wobei in die Stromung weise oder farbige, aus einer feinen Duse austretende Rauchsubstanzen in Form von Aerosolen injiziert werden. Das Verfahren ist beschrankt auf Stromungsvorgange, die eine relativ geringe innere Diffusion aufweisen, da sonst die Rauchfaden sich schnell verbreitern und nicht mehr auswertbar werden. Dieser Aufsatz gibt eine Ubersicht uber viele bisherige Anwendungen des sog. Spark-Tracing-Verfahrens in der Stromungsmestechnik.

In studying gas flow, the physical motion of the medium, is normally made visible by blowing in smoke or lightweight particles. These methods are limited to the observation of more complicated phenomena like turbulence, boundary layer flow or three-dimensional flow. In spark tracing, the luminous ionized plasma channel of an electric spark discharge is the indicator. This offers the particular advantage that it is comparatively mass-free, because the luminous ions of a gas discharge consist of the material of the flowing medium. This method has special advantages with three-dimensional or nonstationary flows, as well as processes of air mixtures in classifiers. The first discharge generates a spark path between two points of wires. If high voltage pulses are now fed to the same electrodes at such high repetition rates that during the interval between two pulses the plasma of the spark has not yet completely deionized, then every subsequent voltage pulse will trace the path of the first spark, which in the meantime has been moved away by the air current.
