Bacteria as workers in the living factory: metal-accumulating bacteria and their potential for materials science.

All organisms require an electron donor and acceptor, frequently in chemical form, but an elegant alternative is to supply these via direct electrochemical means. Electricity has been used to stimulate microbial metabolism for over 50 years. Since the first report of oxygenating media using anodic oxygen generation from electrolysis in 1956, researchers have made use of applied power systems to supply energy for microbial respiratory processes from fermentations to anaerobic reduction of toxic pollutants. Bioelectrical reactors (BERs) have been utilized for culturing organisms, influencing metabolite production, and biotransformation of a wide array of compounds. Both enrichment and pure cultures have been cultivated in the presence of applied current, showcasing the applicative diversity of these systems. As the need for more environmentally conscious solutions to waste-treatment, remediation, and cultivation efforts increases, systems that supply energy to microorganisms without chemical amendment are becoming more attractive. Additionally, the essential flexibility of BERs offers an almost unlimited range of solutions for metabolic stimulation and downstream application.

Review: Direct and indirect electrical stimulation of microbial metabolism.

Microbial metal reduction can be a strategy for remediation of metal contaminations and wastes. Bacteria are capable of mobilization and immobilization of metals and in some cases, the bacteria which can reduce metal ions show the ability to precipitate metals at nanometer scale. Biosynthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) using bacteria has emerged as rapidly developing research area in green nanotechnology across the globe with various biological entities being employed in synthesis of NPs constantly forming an impute alternative for conventional chemical and physical methods. Optimization of the processes can result in synthesis of NPs with desired morphologies and controlled sizes, fast and clean. The aim of this review is, therefore, to make a reflection on the current state and future prospects and especially the possibilities and limitations of the above mentioned bio-based technique for industries.

Biological oxidation of ferrous sulphate by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans: a review on the kinetic aspects

Recent developments in the biosynthesis of nanomaterials have demonstrated the important role of biological systems and microorganisms in nanoscience and nanotechnology. These organisms show a unique potential in environmentally friendly production and accumulation of nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes. Therefore, researchers in the field of nanoparticle synthesis are focusing their attention to biological systems. In order to obtain different applied chemical compositions, controlled monodispersity, desired morphologies (e.g., amorphous, spherical, needles, crystalline, triangular, and hexagonal), and interested particle size, they have investigated the biological mechanism and enzymatic process of nanoparticle production. In this review, most of these organisms used in nanoparticle synthesis are shown.

Production of nanoparticles using organisms

The concentrations of ferrous and ferric ions change dramatically during the course of the batch experiments usually performed to study the kinetics of the bacterial oxidation of ferrous ions and sulfide minerals. This change in concentration of the iron species during the course of the experiment often makes it difficult to interpret the results of these experiments, as is evidenced by the lack of consensus concerning the mechanism of bacterial leaching. If the concentrations of ferrous and ferric ions were constant throughout the course of the batch experiment, then the role of the bacteria could be easily established, because the rate of the chemical leaching should be the same at a given redox potential in the presence and in the absence of bacteria. In this paper we report an experiment designed to obtain kinetic data under these conditions. The redox potential is used as a measure of the concentrations of ferrous and ferric ions, and the redox potential of the leaching solution is controlled throughout the experiment by electrolysis. The effects of ferrous, ferric, and arsenite ions on the rate of growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans on ferrous ions in this redox-controlled reactor are presented. In addition, the growth of this bacterium on ferrous ions in batch culture was also determined, and it is shown that the parameters obtained from the batch culture and the redox-controlled batch culture are the same. An analysis of the results from the batch culture indicates that the initial number of bacteria that are adapted to the solution depends on the concentrations of ferrous and arsenite ions.
