Traffic engineering is an important mechanism for Internet network providers seeking to optimize network performance and traffic delivery. Routing optimization plays a key role in traffic engineering, finding efficient routes so as to achieve the desired network performance. In this survey we review Internet traffic engineering from the perspective of routing optimization. A taxonomy of routing algorithms in the literature is provided, dating from the advent of the TE concept in the late 1990s. We classify the algorithms into multiple dimensions: unicast/multicast, intra-/inter- domain, IP-/MPLS-based and offline/online TE schemes. In addition, we investigate some important traffic engineering issues, including robustness, TE interactions, and interoperability with overlay selfish routing. In addition to a review of existing solutions, we also point out some challenges in TE operation and important issues that are worthy of investigation in future research activities.

An overview of routing optimization for internet traffic engineering

Network management is becoming increasingly challenging with the relentless growth in network size, traffic volume, and the diversity in QoS requirements. Traditionally, the concept of predefined Service Level Agreements (SLAs) has been utilized to establish QoS parameters. However, most state-of-the-art technologies in this area are both proprietary and inflexible. To this end, Software Defined Networking (SDN) has the potential to make network management tasks flexible, scalable, and an open platform to encourage innovation. In this paper, we present the design of PolicyCop, an open, flexible, and vendor agnostic QoS policy management framework targeted towards OpenFlow based SDN. PolicyCop provides an interface for specifying QoS SLAs and then exploits the control plane's API to enforce them. PolicyCop also monitors the network and autonomically readjusts network parameters to meet customer SLAs. We present experimental results to demonstrate PolicyCop's effectiveness in ensuring throughput, latency, and reliability guarantees.

PolicyCop: An Autonomic QoS Policy Enforcement Framework for Software Defined Networks

A method for resource optimized network virtualization overlay transport in a virtualized data center environment includes an optimized virtualized transport mechanism based on MPLS-TP tunneling technology. The transport mechanism may include a usage monitoring and resource usage advertisement mechanism based on IGP-TE protocol extension. Also, the transport mechanism may include a path computation engine (PCE) based optimal path computation for a virtualized transport tunnel used to carry VM-to-VM traffic across the virtualized data center. Additionally, the transport mechanism may include a SDN controller for provisioning and control of virtualized machines and a virtualized transport system.

Method for resource optimized network virtualization overlay transport in virtualized data center environments

A fast rerout (FRR) technique that may be deployed at the edge of a network having first and second edge devices coupled to a neiboring routing domain. If the first edge device detects a node or link failure that prevents it from communicating with the neighboring domain, the first edge device (830) reroutes at least some data packets addressed to the neighboring domain to the second edge device. The second edge device receives the reroute packets and then forwards (835) the packets to the neigboring domain. Notably, the second edge device is not permitted to reroute the received packets a second time, e.g., upon identifying another time-domain node or link failure. As such, loops are avoided at the edge of the network and packets are rerouted to the neighboring routing domain faster and more efficiently than in prior implementations.

Fast reroute (frr) protection at the edge of a rfc 2547 network

In this paper we present the architectural implications of flow-aware networking, or FAN, a new approach for realizing QoS guarantees. FAN performs traffic control based on user-defined flows using implicit admission control and per-flow scheduling. This allows adequate performance guarantees for streaming and elastic flows without requiring class of service distinction or relying on signalled traffic specifications. We argue that FAN is a new direction for Internet quality of service that is arguably necessary as an alternative to flawed classical architectures and sufficient to meet user performance requirements in a cost-effective way.
