Laboratory evaluation of warm mix asphalt mixtures containing electric arc furnace (EAF) steel slag

The asphalt industry is constantly attempting to reduce its emissions as concerns are growing on global warming. This is done by decreasing the mixing and compaction temperatures of asphalt mixtures without affecting the properties of the mix which is possible through numerous available technologies in the industry. The production of asphalt mix is done by warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology at considerably lower temperatures (120°C or lower). Less energy consumption, lower mixing and compaction temperatures, early site opening, reduced ageing, fewer emissions, cool weather paving, better workability and, finally, an extended paving window could be mentioned as some of the benefits obtained by using the WMA. This paper presents the WMA techniques and technologies such as foaming techniques, wax and chemical additives techniques. Additionally, the performance of WMA popular technologies such as Sasobit®, WAM®-Foam, Evotherm®, Low energy asphalt, Rediset® WMX and REVIX™ are fully described.

Various researchers are developing efforts to integrate waste and by-products as alternative materials in road construction and maintenance, reducing environmental impacts and promoting a circular economy. Among the alternative materials that several authors have studied regarding their use as partial or total substitutes for natural aggregates in the asphalt paving industry, the steel slag aggregate (SSA) and recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) from construction demolition waste (CDW) stand out. This paper reviews and discusses the characteristics and performance of these materials when used as aggregates in asphalt mixtures. Based on the various studies analyzed, it was possible to conclude that incorporating SSA or RCA in asphalt mixtures for road pavements has functional, mechanical, and environmental advantages. However, it is essential to consider some possible drawbacks of these aggregates that are discussed in this paper, to define the acceptable uses of SSA and RCA as sustainable feedstocks for road paving works.

Steel Slag and Recycled Concrete Aggregates: Replacing Quarries to Supply Sustainable Materials for the Asphalt Paving Industry

This work aims to use wax to modify a binder employed in the paving industry. This wax can be obtained either directly or as a by-product from plastic waste′s thermal cracking (pyrolysis). The study characterizes this sustainable material and the binders resulting from blending it with conventional or modified bitumen with other additives applied in the manufacture of bituminous mixtures. Different tests were used: thermogravimetric and spectroscopic analysis; consistency tests; testing of dynamic viscosity at various temperatures; and assessment of the rheologic properties of binders. As a result, several crucial findings were reached: this sustainable wax promotes changes in the viscosity of the binders, their handling temperatures can be reduced, and it contributes to some goals of the U.N. 2030 Agenda. In summary, this work allowed us to conclude that the positive effects of a suitable modification of the bituminous binders, which incorporated this wax and other additives, led to improved consistency and rheological behaviour, having provided, for example, lower temperature susceptibility and higher permanent deformation resistance.
