A video transmission system for facilitating transmission of video and control signals, particularly infrared remote control signals, between different locations in a residence using existing telephone wiring. Simultaneous transmission of signals of both types over active telephone lines is possible without interference with telephone communications. Transmission succeeds without requiring special treatement of the video signals beyond RF conversion, despite signal attenuation inherent in transmission over the telephone line media. Two or more video sources may be tied into the system, and selected as desired. Remote control signals generated in one room may be utilized without requiring a clear line of sight between the remote control device and the receiver.

A method and system for communicating between a number of computers within a residence over an active telephone network, and for communicating data between a telephone exchange and the residence in a first data band concurrently with the computers communicating in a second data band over the telephone wiring network within the residence. A modem bridges communication in the first data band and the second data band enabling the computers to communicate with the telephone exchange, which may provide a data path to other computers, for instance over the Internet. In addition, signals such as video signals can be distributed within the residence in an additional high-frequency band making use of common circuitry for both data and video communication.

High-speed data communication over a residential telephone wiring network

The echo canceller burst mode (ECBM) is part of a "silicon boutique," a family of devices that offer a cost-effective industrial solution to the problem of ISDN basic access. ECBM takes advantage of both the echo cancellation and the time compression techniques. It leaves a silent period in each direction of transmission; this creates periods in which only the received signal or only the echo is present, which greately simplifies the echo canceller and the timing recovery. The components of the family implement the signal processing, power feed, and line interface functions needed for the ISDN basic access (144 kbits/s); they take into account the requirement of different connection schemes, yet offering flexibility to accommodate possible standards evolution. Their coordination avoids "glue" components and facilitates some basic access functions (e.g., activation, maintenance, monitoring).

This sociotechnical analysis assesses the effects on the educational environment of migrating from the currently fragmented analog system to an environment dominated by integrated digital telecommunications systems. An integrated telecommunications channel is at the heart of the design for an ISDN (integrated services digital network). ISDN is a set of technical standards and a network architecture that describe a digital telecommunications channel able to carry voice, data, and compressed video on the same telecommunications network. Two central issues are how an integrated telecommunications system will differentially affect voice, data, and video users, and whether ISDN inherently favors large or small "customers" for telecommunications services. The conceptual discussion is followed by a case study of a large university (Ohio State) in the process of developing an integrated telecommunications system. Two-way communication over a single transmission line between one or more information sources and a group of telephones, computers, and televisions

The paper presents an approach to ISDN suitable both for a pilot service, to be carried out in the near future in Italy, and for long-term developments with a high degree of penetration of ISDN setvices. Integration of ISDN services in the digital telephone exchange "UT" has taken place at all levels: system architecture, subscriber access structure, circuit connecting network, transmission links, call processing, and 0 & M functions. We also describe a new protocol that facilitates the dialog between exchange modules and between different exchanges for the data service. It is suitable for implementing packet transit switches with low complexity, high throughput, and low transit time. A special peripheral-handling processor handles the most repetitive functions of the protocols both in the local exchange and in other parts of the network, while the exchange central processor performs the ISDN call-handling functions; the same peripheral processors and the same module processor are used for both ISDN and telephone services. Finally, the paper shows how this architecture can evolve to include new wide-band services and new techniques to implement high-capacity fast packet switches.
