Communities of microscopic plant life, or phytoplankton, dominate the Earth's aquatic ecosystems. This important new book by Colin Reynolds covers the adaptations, physiology and population dynamics of phytoplankton communities in lakes and rivers and oceans. It provides basic information on composition, morphology and physiology of the main phyletic groups represented in marine and freshwater systems and in addition reviews recent advances in community ecology, developing an appreciation of assembly processes, co-existence and competition, disturbance and diversity. Although focussed on one group of organisms, the book develops many concepts relevant to ecology in the broadest sense, and as such will appeal to graduate students and researchers in ecology, limnology and oceanography.

The Ecology of Phytoplankton

This paper is a summary and synthesis of the role of nutrients and spatial and temporal fluctuations in controlling the species composition, diversity, and seasonal succession of planktonic algal communities. We do not review the full breadth and depth of the literature that has appeared since the seminal papers by Hutchinson (34) and Dugdale (19). Rather, we focus on some of the major questions and hypotheses, and evaluate these in light of their consistency with observation and experimentation. Because the combined net effect of limiting nutrients, major ions, pH, and other physical factors ultimately determines the reproductive rate of a local algal population, we first briefly review the data on the role of these factors in phytoplankton ecology. In this article we review the biological effects of Al, primarily with respect to the chemical factors controlling Al bioavailability and toxicity, and how its biological effects are best predicted. Our intent is not to duplicate recent reviews on Al chemistry or toxicity, but rather to update the literature since these reviews were published, and to focus on Al speciation and other external chemical influences on Al bioavailability to freshwater biota. Briefly, we first review Al chemistry, with a specific focus on understanding, as well as measuring, Al chemical species of importance to aquatic biota. Next we more comprehensively review Al toxicity and bioavailability to freshwater algae, with a thorough analysis of the relationships between speciation and toxicity, the role of important chemical complexing agents such as P, Si, and organic carbon, as well as the potential for Al to impact algal community structure. The Bioavailability and Toxicity of Aluminum in Aquatic Environments

This comprehensive literature review of the phosphorus nutrition and metabolism of eukaryotic microalgae deals sequentially with (1) extracellular P-compounds available for algal utilization and growth; (2) orthophosphate uptake mechanisms, kinetics, and influence from environmental variables; (3) phosphatase-mediated utilization of organic phosphates involving multiple enzymes, induction and cellular location of repressible and irrepressible phosphatases, and their role in growth physiological processes; (4) intracellular phosphate metabolism covering diversity of phosphometabolites. ATP-linked energy regulation, polyphosphate pools and storage roles, phospholipids and phospholipases; (5) steady-state and transient-state models relating phosphate utilization to growth; (6) ecological aspects covering manifestations of phosphorus limitation, interspecific competition for phosphonutrients among microorganisms, and current views on phosphorus cycling and turnover in aquatic ecosystems. Although concentrating on the microalgae, the review often points out sounder conclusions drawn from bacteria and fungi, and includes specific macroalgae in considering certain subtopics where such algae were better investigated and provided a good basis for comparison with the microalgae.

The utilization of inorganic and organic phosphorous compounds as nutrients by eukaryotic microalgae: a multidisciplinary perspective: part 1

Concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen in surface waters are being regulated in the United States and European Union. Human activity has raised the concentrations of these nutrients, leading to eutrophication of inland waters, which causes nuisance growth of algae and other aquatic plants. Control of phosphorus often has had the highest priority because of its presumed leading role in limiting development of aquatic plant biomass. Experimental evidence shows, however, that nitrogen is equally likely to limit growth of algae and aquatic plants in inland waters, and that additions of both nutrients cause substantially more algal growth than either added alone. A dual control strategy for N and P will reduce transport of anthropogenic nitrogen through drainage networks to aquatic ecosystems that may be nitrogen limited. Rationale for Control of Anthropogenic Nitrogen and Phosphorus to Reduce Eutrophication of Inland Waters

SUMMARY
Several aspects of the metabolism and composition of a strain of Anabaena have been studied during phosphorus deficiency. The effects of medium composition, substrate concentration, temperature, pH, and illumination on alkaline phosphatase activity and phosphate uptake have been examined. Of particular interest among these results was the dependence of maximum alkaline phosphatase activity on Ca and of phosphate uptake on Mg. Depletion of dissolved phosphate from the culture medium runs accompanied by a marked increase in alkaline phosphatase activity, initial rate of phosphate uptake, and total amount of phosphate taken up to satisfaction of the phosphorus debt. Readdition of phosphate to a phosphorus-deficient culture resulted in a rapid decline in the ability to take up phosphate but no loss of alkaline phosphatase beyond dilution of activity already present. Entry into phophorus deficiency was accompanied by a loss of heterocysts, a decline in chlorophyll a, protein, RNA, and cellular phosphorus, and an increase in carbohydrate per unit dry weight. The possible use of these changes as physiological indicators of phosphorus limitation in natural situations is discussed.
