This paper focuses on the influence of repetitive square wave voltage rise time on partial discharge pulse characteristics in the ultra-high frequency range. Paerial Discharge (PD) tests on single-point contact crossed pairs were carried out using repetitive square wave voltages with a wide range of rise times, from 200 ns to 400 μs, including also 50 Hz sinusoidal voltage waveforms. Experimental results show that rise time has a significant influence on magnitude and frequency spectrum of PD pulses. Voltages of shorter rise times generate larger PD pulses with a predominance of high frequency components in the energy spectrum. Interpretations are presented for this phenomenon.

Effect of rise time on PD pulse features under repetitive square wave voltages

Dealing with electrical rotating machines fed by voltage converters, understanding the effect of impulsive voltage parameters on partial discharge features is of great importance to select appropriate impulsive voltage to perform partial discharge inception voltage measurements. Similarly, the dependence of insulation endurance on voltage parameters might help to develop qualification tests providing more accurate evaluation of insulation performance. The effect of voltage duty cycle on partial discharge characteristics and endurance of inverter-fed motor insulation were investigated through a large number of tests performed on single-contact crossed enameled wires under bipolar repetitive impulse wave voltages. The partial discharge pattern, magnitude, repetition rate show that short impulsive voltage duration (i.e. small duty cycles), can induce asymmetric PD patterns and reduce the probability of PD inception at the falling flanks of impulsive voltages. Moreover, the endurance tests indicate that the duty cycle of the repetitive square wave voltage can affect the insulation endurance significantly. Repetitive square wave voltages with small duty cycles tend to overestimate endurance. Accordingly, when performing partial discharge inception voltage and endurance tests on insulation of inverter-fed motors, the influence of duty cycle should be carefully considered.

Effect of repetitive impulsive voltage duty cycle on partial discharge features and insulation endurance of enameled wires for inverter-fed low voltage machines

Modern electrical machines employed in transportation applications are required to provide high performance in terms of power (and torque) density. At the same time, being these applications safety-critical, a significant level of reliability and/or fault tolerance is expected. Among all the factors which can compromise motors reliability, partial discharges (PDs) inception is one of the most crucial, in particular for low voltage, random wound machines. This article presents an extensive experimental investigation on PDs in electrical machines for aerospace applications. Measurements are carried out using both sinusoidal and fast-rising pulses in a representative aerospace environment, emulating the typical ambient conditions encountered throughout a commercial aircraft mission, and beyond (i.e., down to 30 mbar). As a main result of the investigation, it is proved that electrical machines employed for actuating primary flight control surfaces feature a higher risk of PDs inception. Therefore, their insulation system demands an extremely careful design.

Electrical Machines for the More Electric Aircraft: Partial Discharges Investigation

A brief summary of the insulation issues associated with the use of power electronics in electrical drives is presented here. The key points that remain open and the perspectives regarding the introduction of wide band-gap devices in aircraft and electrical vehicles actuators are discussed, showing how the benefits brought about by these devices might be offset by insulation issues.

Reliability of low voltage inverter-fed motors: What have we learned, perspectives, open points

The use of static frequency converters, which have a high switching frequency, generates voltage pulses with a high rate of change over time. In combination with cable and motor impedance, this generates repetitive overvoltage at the motor terminals, influencing the occurrence of partial discharges between conductors, causing degradation of the insulation of electric motors. Understanding the effects resulting from the frequency converter–electric motor interaction is essential for developing and implementing insulation systems with characteristics that support the most diverse applications, have an operating life under economically viable conditions, and promote energy efficiency. With this objective, a search was carried out in three recognized databases. Duplicate articles were eliminated, resulting in 1069 articles, which were systematically categorized and reviewed, resulting in 481 articles discussing the causes of degradation in the insulation of electric motors powered by frequency converters. A bibliographic portfolio was built and evaluated, with 230 articles that present results on the factors that can be used in estimating the life span of electric motor insulation. In this structure, the historical evolution of the collected information, the authors who conducted the most research on the theme, and the relevance of the knowledge presented in the works were considered.

Insulation Life Span of Low-Voltage Electric Motors—A Survey

This paper discusses a novel estimation method for partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) of magnet wire under inverter surge voltage application. We focused on the generation probability of initial electrons, which induce PD under high electric field and short rise time of surge voltage, by means of Volume-Time theory. We applied the Volume-Time theory to PD inception phenomena in a wedge-shaped air gap of twisted pair samples composed of enameled wires, and estimated PDIV in consideration of initial electron generation probability with temporal and spatial change in electric field distribution. We could estimate PDIV under different waveforms of applied surge voltage for different specifications of enameled wires. PDIV estimated by the extended Volume-Time theory agreed well with the measured PDIV. The estimated PDIV decreased with the increase in the rise time of applied voltage waveform, which corresponded to the V-t characteristics in the time range of inverter surge voltage.

Estimation of partial discharge inception voltage of magnet wires under inverter surge voltage by volume-time theory

In this paper, we discussed partial discharge (PD) inception characteristics and mechanisms of magnet wires for inverter-fed motor under repetitive surge voltage application. Experimental results revealed the relationship between PD inception voltage (PDIV) and parameters of applied surge voltage waveform. The relationship between PD pulses and repetitive surge voltage pulses was also investigated. PD generation mechanisms were discussed from the view point of charge behavior in the wedge-shaped air gap and on the enamel surface.
