All one needs to know about fog computing and related edge computing paradigms: A complete survey

Among the panoply of applications enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT), smart and connected health care is a particularly important one. Networked sensors, either worn on the body or embedded in our living environments, make possible the gathering of rich information indicative of our physical and mental health. Captured on a continual basis, aggregated, and effectively mined, such information can bring about a positive transformative change in the health care landscape. In particular, the availability of data at hitherto unimagined scales and temporal longitudes coupled with a new generation of intelligent processing algorithms can: (a) facilitate an evolution in the practice of medicine, from the current post facto diagnose-and-treat reactive paradigm, to a proactive framework for prognosis of diseases at an incipient stage, coupled with prevention, cure, and overall management of health instead of disease, (b) enable personalization of treatment and management options targeted particularly to the specific circumstances and needs of the individual, and (c) help reduce the cost of health care while simultaneously improving outcomes. In this paper, we highlight the opportunities and challenges for IoT in realizing this vision of the future of health care.

Dynamic energy-aware cloudlet-based mobile cloud computing model for green computing

Recent growth in the processing and memory resources of mobile devices has fueled research within the field of mobile virtualization. Mobile virtualization enables multiple persona on a single mobile device by hosting heterogeneous operating systems (OSs) concurrently. However, adding a virtualization layer to resource-constrained mobile devices with real-time requirements can lead to intolerable performance overheads. Hardware virtualization extensions that support efficient virtualization have been incorporated in recent mobile processors. Prior to hardware virtualization extensions, virtualization techniques that are enabled by performance prohibitive and resource consuming software were adopted for mobile devices. Moreover, mobile virtualization solutions lack standard procedures for device component sharing and interfacing between multiple OSSs. The objective of this article is to survey software- and hardware-based mobile virtualization techniques in light of the recent advancements fueled by the hardware support for mobile virtualization. Challenges and issues faced in virtualization of CPU, memory, I/O, interrupt, and network interfaces are highlighted. Moreover, various performance parameters are presented in a detailed comparative analysis to quantify the efficiency of mobile virtualization techniques and solutions.

A Survey of Mobile Device Virtualization: Taxonomy and State of the Art

Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) has been introduced as a viable solution to the inherited limitations of mobile computing. These limitations include battery lifetime, processing power, and storage capacity. By using MCC, the processing and the storage of intensive mobile device jobs will take place in the cloud system and the results will be returned to the mobile device. This will reduce the required power and time for completing such intensive jobs. However, connecting mobile devices with the cloud suffers from the high network latency and the huge transmission power consumption especially when using 3G/LTE connections. In this paper, we introduce a Cloudlet based MCC system aiming to reduce the power consumption and the network delay while using MCC. We merged the MCC concepts with the proposed Cloudlet framework and propose a new framework for the MCC model. Our practical experimental results showed that using the proposed model reduces the power consumption from the mobile device, besides reducing the communication latency when the mobile device requests a job to take place remotely while keeping high quality of service stander.

Scalable Cloudlet-based Mobile Computing Model

Interest in using Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) for compute intensive mobile devices jobs such as multimedia applications has been growing. In fact, many new research efforts were invested to maximize the mobile intensive jobs offloading to the cloud within the cloud system coverage area. However, a large scale MCC deployment challenges and limitations are not considered. In this paper, a large scale Cloudlet-based MCC system deployment is introduced, aiming at reducing the power consumption and the network delay of multimedia applications while using MCC. The proposed deployment offers a large coverage area that can be used by mobile devices while they are moving from one location to another to reduce broadband communication needs. Practical experimental results and simulated results using show that using the proposed model reduces the power consumption of the mobile devices as well as reducing the communication latency when the mobile device requests a job to be performed remotely while satisfying the high quality of service requirements of mobile users.

Large Scale Cloudlets Deployment for Efficient Mobile Cloud Computing

Mobile devices are used to perform many useful tasks in our daily life. All around the world, many people are using their smart phones to communicate with others, identify their location, and do online shopping. These useful applications involve sharing personal and sensitive information. Also, the smart devices have many weaknesses, such as: limited battery life time, limited processing capacity and security issues. The mobile cloud computing (MCC) can be used to overcome these limitations. Using MCC improved the performance of many applications by conducting the processing at the cloud and sending back the results to the mobile device. But there are still many issues need to be addressed and considered when using MCC specially when dealing with applications that need live interaction and protecting the privacy. In this paper, we will study the main issues associated with mobile cloud computing models that include: security, performance, and quality of service. Then, we will present secure implementation of the cloudlet-based mobile cloud computing framework with its prototype that uses trust delegation technique to provide better security/performance tradeoffs.
