 Abstract—The increase in availability and popularity of mobile wireless devices has lead researchers to develop a wide variety of Mobile Ad-hoc NETworking (MANET) protocols to exploit the unique communication opportunities presented by these devices. Devices are able to communicate directly using the wireless spectrum in a peer-to-peer fashion, and route messages through intermediate nodes, however the nature of wireless shared communication and mobile devices result in many routing and security challenges which must be addressed before deploying a MANET. In this paper we investigate the range of MANET routing protocols available and discuss the functionalities of several ranging from early protocols such as DSDV to more advanced such as MAODV, our protocol study focuses upon works by Perkins in developing and improving MANET routing. A range of literature relating to the field of MANET routing was identified and reviewed, we also reviewed literature on the topic of securing AODV based MANETs as this may be the most popular MANET protocol. The literature review identified a number of trends within research papers such as exclusive use of the random waypoint mobility model, excluding key metrics from simulation results and not comparing protocol performance against available alternatives.

A Review of Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad-Hoc NETworks (MANET)

Wireless Technology is at its peak when we talk about research and innovation. This field has become a hub of invention of new theories and structures. Mobile Ad-hoc Network is a special point of focus for the researchers. MANET is a collection of wireless mobile nodes which forms a dynamic temporary network without using any existing infrastructure. In recent time the market of mobile devices, laptops, hand held and portable devices is at its zenith so communication between such devices is an important issue. Routing is an essential part in the success of communication among these mobile structures. Routing protocols play an important role for finding an efficient and reliable route from source to destination. In the literature, there are numerous MANET routing protocols aiming to find the most suitable path from source to destination. In this paper, a comprehensive simulation based performance study and analysis is performed on various types of routing protocols over MANET. Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), Temporally-Ordered Routing Algorithm (TORA), Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) and Geographic Routing Protocol (GRP) has been considered for investigation in this paper based on OPNET simulation. Moreover the performance of these routing protocols will be measured on the basis of throughput, delay, load and data dropped metrics.

Comprehensive Evaluation of AODV, DSR, GRP, OLSR and TORA Routing Protocols with varying number of nodes and traffic applications over MANETs

With the widespread use of IoT applications and the increasing trend in the number of connected smart devices, the concept of routing has become very challenging. In this regard, the IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power and Lossy Networks (PRL) was standardized to be adopted in IoT networks. Nevertheless, while mobile IoT domains have gained significant popularity in recent years, since RPL was fundamentally designed for stationary IoT applications, it could not well adjust with the dynamic fluctuations in mobile applications. While there have been a number of studies on tuning RPL for mobile IoT applications, but still there is a high demand for more efforts to reach a standard version of this protocol for such applications. Accordingly, in this survey, we try to conduct a precise and comprehensive experimental study on the impact of various mobility models on the performance of a mobility-aware RPL to help this process. In this regard, a complete and scrutinized survey of the mobility models has been presented to be able to fairly justify and compare the outcome results. A significant set of evaluations has been conducted via precise IoT simulation tools to monitor and compare the performance of the network and its IoT devices in mobile RPL-based IoT applications under the presence of different mobility models from different perspectives including power consumption, reliability, latency, and control packet overhead. This will pave the way for researchers in both academia and industry to be able to compare the impact of various mobility models on the functionality of RPL, and consequently to design and implement application-specific and even a standard version of this protocol, which is capable of being employed in mobile IoT applications.

Impacts of Mobility Models on RPL-Based Mobile IoT Infrastructures: An Evaluative Comparison and Survey

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a collection of wireless mobile nodes dynamically forming a network topology without the use of any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. MANET is a self configuring network and the topology of the network keeps on changing as the nodes move randomly and organize themselves in an arbitrarily manner. Mobile nodes communicate with each other using multihop wireless links. Each node in the network also acts as a router, forwarding data packets for other nodes. In order to facilitate communication within the network, a routing protocol is used to discover routes between nodes. Due to higher mobility in nodes and dynamic infrastructure of MANETs, Routing is important issue in ad hoc networks. ‗In this paper three routing protocols AODV (Ad- Hoc on-Demand Distance Vector), DSDV (Destination Sequenced Distance-Vector) and DSR (Dynamic Source Routing) are compared'. The metrics used for performance analysis are Packet Delivery Ratio, Average end-to-end Delay & Number of Packets Dropped.

Evaluation of mesh routing protocols for wireless community networks

The fundamental characteristic which differentiates MANETs from other wireless or wired networks is mobility. Therefore, MANET routing protocols are designed to adaptively cater for dynamic changes in topology while maximizing throughput and packet delivery ratio, and minimizing delay, routing load and energy consumption. A major design issue for an efficient and effective routing protocol for real MANETs is, therefore, to achieve optimum values of performance parameters under network scenarios where nodes are subjected to different types of mobility that dynamically change the network topology. Our simulative study on MANET routing protocols and mobility models aims to determine the performance of current MANET routing protocols with respect to various mobility models implemented in ns-2. We compare a number of reactive and proactive routing protocols including AODV, DSR, DSDV, OLSR and DYMO. The results of our extensive network simulations are tabulated along with a comprehensive analysis. The effort allows a fair comparison of the capabilities and limitations of different types of mobility patterns and their suitability for contemporary MANET routing protocols.
