Covalent organic frameworks offer a molecular platform for integrating organic units into periodically ordered yet extended two- and three-dimensional polymers to create topologically well-defined polygonal lattices and built-in discrete micropores and/or mesopores. This polymer architecture is unique as it enables predesigning both primary- and high-order structures, greatly enhancing our capabilities of designing organic materials to produce predictable structures and to achieve unique properties and functions. Progress over the past 15 years in the design, synthesis and functional exploration of COFs has successively established the basis of the COF field and COFs have shown the great potential of chemistry in developing a class of amazing organic materials. In this review, we focus on analysing the historic developments of COFs to uncover a full materials and application picture by providing comprehensive yet clear guidance for molecular design, synthetic control and functional exploration. We scrutinise the structural components of COFs including building blocks, reactive sites and functional groups with the aim of finding the origins of structural designability and diversity, as well as multiple functionalities. We disclose strategies for designing and synthesising frameworks to construct various tailor-made interfaces, and for exploring skeletons and pores to design properties and functions. With well-defined skeletons, pores and interfaces that offer a chemical basis to trigger and control interactions with photons, excitons, phonons, polarons, electrons, holes, spins, ions and molecules, we illustrate the current status of our understandings of structure-property correlations, and unveil the principles for establishing a regime to design unique functions that originate from and are inherent to structures. We predict the key central issues in design and synthesis, the challenges in functional design and the future directions from the perspectives of chemistry, physics and materials science.

Covalent organic frameworks: an ideal platform for designing ordered materials and advanced applications

Emissive species are powerful for luminescent detection with high sensitivity and simple procedure and for light-emitting diode (LED) lighting because of their high efficiency, long lifetime, and low energy consumption. Here we propose the concept of multiple luminescence emissions from a single matrix or species under single-wavelength excitation. Multiemission not only realizes the high sensitivity of luminescence sensing but also possesses the capacity of self-reference for environment-free interferences. The color change is also convenient for visible detection. In multiemission species, every emissive center responds to a specific analyte to improve the efficiency for multiple-target detection. Multiemission also extends the applications to anticounterfeiting, colorful LEDs, and information storage. To date, it is still challenging to combine more than one type of emissive center in a single matrix or species. Obtaining multiemission under single-wavelength excitation also needs exquisite design. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous hybrid assemblies prepared with metal ions and organic ligands. Metal nodes and ligands with large π-conjugated systems have the potential for the construction of luminescent MOFs. Abundant and diverse precursors provide the possibility to prepare MOFs with multiple luminescence emissions. The pores or channels of MOFs also act as hosts to encapsulate luminescent guest species as additional emissive sites. In this Account, we propose the concept of multiple-luminescence MOFs (ML-MOFs) and summarize the recent research progress on their designs, constructions, and applications reported by our group and others. ML-MOFs are MOFs that possess more than one emissive center under single-wavelength excitation. Six different kinds of construction strategies of ML-MOFs are introduced: (1) multiemission from both metal nodes and ligands in single MOFs; (2) use of mixed-metal nodes as multiemission centers in single MOFs; (3) combination of different emissive MOFs as a whole to achieve multiemission application; (4) host-guest emissions from emissive MOFs after encapsulation of luminescent guest species; (5) organization of different emissive ligands in a single MOF for multiemission; and (6) use of single ligands exhibiting dual emission to prepare ML-MOFs. We also discuss the mechanisms that realize multiple emissions from MOFs under single-wavelength excitation, such as the antenna effect and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer. The applications of ratiometric sensing, LED lighting, anticounterfeiting, and information storage are summarized. With this Account, we hope to spark new ideas and to inspire new endeavors in the design and construction of ML-MOFs, especially with postsynthetic techniques such as postsynthetic modification, postsynthetic exchange, and postsynthetic deprotection, to promote the applications of MOFs in sensing, lighting, information storage, and others.

Metal-Organic Frameworks with Multiple Luminescence Emissions: Designs and Applications.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous materials constructed from molecular building blocks using diverse linkage chemistries. Their modular construction system allows not only for tailor-made design but also for an immense variety of building blocks, opening the door to numerous different functionalities and potential applications. As a consequence, a large number of building blocks that can act as light-harvesters, semiconductors, ligands, binding sites or redox centers have recently been integrated into the scaffolds of COFs. This unique combination of reticular chemistry with the molecular control of intrinsic properties paves the way towards the design of new semiconducting materials for (opto-)electronic applications such as sensors, photocatalysts or -electrodes, supercapacitor and battery materials, solar-harvesting devices or light emitting diodes. With new developments regarding the linkage motif, highly stable but still tunable COFs have been developed for applications even under harsh conditions. Further, the molecular stacking modes and distances in the COFs have been investigated as a powerful means to control optical and electrical characteristics of these self-assembled frameworks. Advanced understanding of optoelectronic processes in COFs has enabled their implementation in optoelectronic devices with promising potential for real-world applications. This review highlights the key developments of design concepts for the synthesis of electro- and photoactive COFs as well as our understanding of optoelectronic processes in these frameworks, hence establishing a new paradigm for the rational construction of well-defined novel optoelectronic materials and devices.

Optoelectronic processes in covalent organic frameworks

Purely organic molecules, which emit light by dual emissive (DE) pathways, have received increased attention in the last decade. These materials are now being utilized in practical optoelectronic, sensing and biomedical applications. In order to further extend the application of the DE emitters, it is crucial to gain a fundamental understanding of the links between the molecular structure and the underlying photophysical processes. This review categorizes the types of DE according to the spin multiplicity and time range of the emission, with emphasis on recent experimental advances. The design rules towards novel DE molecular candidates, the most perspective types of DE and possible future applications are outlined. These exciting developments highlight the opportunities for new materials synthesis and pave the way for accelerated future innovation and developments in this area.

Dual emission in purely organic materials for optoelectronic applications.

Cancer nanomedicine is one of the most promising domains that has emerged in the continuing search for cancer diagnosis and treatment. The rapid development of nanomaterials and nanotechnology provide a vast array of materials for use in cancer nanomedicine. Among the various nanomaterials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are becoming an attractive class of upstarts owing to their high crystallinity, structural regularity, inherent porosity, extensive functionality, design flexibility, and good biocompatibility. In this comprehensive review, recent developments and key achievements of COFs are provided, including their structural design, synthesis methods, nanocrystallization, and functionalization strategies. Subsequently, a systematic overview of the potential oncotherapy applications achieved till date in the fast-growing field of COFs is provided with the aim to inspire further contributions and developments to this nascent but promising field. Finally, development opportunities, critical challenges, and some personal perspectives for COF-based cancer therapeutics are presented.

Nanoscale covalent organic frameworks as theranostic platforms for oncotherapy: synthesis, functionalization, and applications

Here we reveal the effects of hydrogen bonds and alkyl groups on the structure and emission of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Hydrogen bonds improve molecular rigidity leading to high crystallinity and restrict intramolecular rotation to enhance the emission of COFs. An excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) effect for dual emission is achieved via the intramolecular hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups and imine bonds. Alkyl groups increase interlayer spacing as a natural "scaffold" and achieve a staggered AB stacking mode to decrease aggregation-caused quenching. Based on the above guidance, COF-4-OH with strong emission is prepared with 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (TFP) and 9,9-dibutyl-2,7-diaminofluorene (DDAF). Strong dual emission is observed and used to differentiate organic solvents with different polarities, to determine the water content in organic solvents, and to detect different pH levels. Our work serves as a guide for the rational design of functional monomers for the preparation of emissive COFs.
