In this correspondence, we propose a novel method to extract illumination insensitive features for face recognition under varying lighting called the gradient faces. Theoretical analysis shows gradient faces is an illumination insensitive measure, and robust to different illumination, including uncontrolled, natural lighting. In addition, gradient faces is derived from the image gradient domain such that it can discover underlying inherent structure of face images since the gradient domain explicitly considers the relationships between neighboring pixel points. Therefore, gradient faces has more discriminating power than the illumination insensitive measure extracted from the pixel domain. Recognition rates of 99.83% achieved on PIE database of 68 subjects, 98.96% achieved on Yale B of ten subjects, and 95.61% achieved on Outdoor database of 132 subjects under uncontrolled natural lighting conditions show that gradient faces is an effective method for face recognition under varying illumination. Furthermore, the experimental results on Yale database validate that gradient faces is also insensitive to image noise and object artifacts (such as facial expressions).

Face Recognition Under Varying Illumination Using Gradientfaces

A face image can be represented by a combination of large-and small-scale features. It is well-known that the variations of illumination mainly affect the large-scale features (low-frequency components), and not so much the small-scale features. Therefore, in relevant existing methods only the small-scale features are extracted as illumination-invariant features for face recognition, while the large-scale intrinsic features are always ignored. In this paper, we argue that both large-and small-scale features of a face image are important for face restoration and recognition. Moreover, we suggest that illumination normalization should be performed mainly on the large-scale features of a face image rather than on the original face image. A novel method of normalizing both the Small-and Large-scale (S&L) features of a face image is proposed. In this method, a single face image is first decomposed into large-and small-scale features. After that, illumination normalization is mainly performed on the large-scale features, and only a minor correction is made on the small-scale features. Finally, a normalized face image is generated by combining the processed large-and small-scale features. In addition, an optional visual compensation step is suggested for improving the visual quality of the normalized image. Experiments on CMU-PIE, Extended Yale B, and FRGC 2.0 face databases show that by using the proposed method significantly better recognition performance and visual results can be obtained as compared to related state-of-the-art methods.

Face recognition technology has come a long way since its beginnings in the previous century. Due to its countless application possibilities in both the private as well as the public sector, it has attracted the interest of research groups from universities and companies around the world. Thanks to this enormous research effort, the recognition rates achievable with the state-of-the-art face recognition technology are steadily growing, even though some issues still pose major challenges to the technology. Amongst these challenges, coping with illumination induced appearance variations is one of the biggest and still not satisfactorily solved. A number of techniques have been proposed in the literature to cope with the illumination induced appearance variations ranging from simple image enhancement techniques, such as histogram equalization or gamma intensity correction, to more elaborate methods, such as homomorphic filtering, anisotropic smoothing or the logarithmic total variation model. This chapter presents an overview of the most popular and efficient normalization techniques which try to solve the illumination variation problem at the preprocessing level. It assesses the techniques on the publicly available YaleB face database and explores their strengths and weaknesses from the theoretical and implementational point of view.
