Journal ArticleDOI
Nut consumption and total and cause-specific mortality: results from the Golestan Cohort Study
Tannaz Eslamparast,Maryam Sharafkhah,Hossein Poustchi,Maryam Hashemian,Sanford M. Dawsey,Neal D. Freedman,Paolo Boffetta,Christian C. Abnet,Arash Etemadi,Akram Pourshams,Akbar Fazeltabar Malekshah,Farhad Islami,Farhad Islami,Farin Kamangar,Farin Kamangar,Shahin Merat,Paul Brennan,Azita Hekmatdoost,Azita Hekmatdoost,Reza Malekzadeh +19 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided for an inverse association between nut consumption and mortality in a developing country, where nut consumption does not track with a healthy lifestyle, and the underlying mechanisms responsible for this association are established.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association of tooth loss and oral hygiene with risk of gastric adenocarcinoma.
Ramin Shakeri,Reza Malekzadeh,Arash Etemadi,Dariush Nasrollahzadeh,Behnoush Abedi-Ardekani,Masoud Khoshnia,Farhad Islami,Akram Pourshams,Michael Pawlita,Paolo Boffetta,Sanford M. Dawsey,Farin Kamangar,Christian C. Abnet +12 more
TL;DR: Evidence is found for an association between oral health and gastric cancer, but the nonmonotonic association, the relatively strong effect of confounder adjustment, and inconsistent results across studies must temper the strength of any conclusions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multiplex H. pylori Serology and Risk of Gastric Cardia and Noncardia Adenocarcinomas.
Ramin Shakeri,Reza Malekzadeh,Dariush Nasrollahzadeh,Dariush Nasrollahzadeh,Michael Pawilta,Gwen Murphy,Farhad Islami,Farhad Islami,Masoud Sotoudeh,Angelika Michel,Arash Etemadi,Tim Waterboer,Hossein Poustchi,Paul Brennan,Paolo Boffetta,Sanford M. Dawsey,Farin Kamangar,Farin Kamangar,Christian C. Abnet +18 more
TL;DR: Individual antigen testing showed that CagA positivity was associated with increased risk of both noncardia and cardia adenocarcinoma, which is similar to some other Asian populations, whereas two antigens were associated with lower risk of gastric cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Renal Function and Risk Factors of Moderate to Severe Chronic Kidney Disease in Golestan Province, Northeast of Iran
Iraj Najafi,Fatemeh Attari,Farhad Islami,Farhad Islami,Ramin Shakeri,Fatemeh Malekzadeh,Rasool Salahi,Mina Yapan Gharavi,Mostafa Hosseini,Behrooz Broumand,Ali Nobakht Haghighi,Bagher Larijani,Reza Malekzadeh +12 more
TL;DR: Screening of individuals with major risk factors of CKD, in order to early detection and treatment of impaired renal function, may be plausible, and the effectiveness of any screening program are warranted.
Journal Article
Prevalence of chronic kidney disease and its associated risk factors: the first report from Iran using both microalbuminuria and urine sediment.
Iraj Najafi,Ramin Shakeri,Farhad Islami,Fatemeh Malekzadeh,Rasool Salahi,Mina Yapan-Gharavi,Mostafa Hosseini,M Hakemi,Sudabeh Alatab,Atieh Rahmati,Behrooz Broumand,Ali Nobakht-Haghighi,Bagher Larijani,Reza Malekzadeh +13 more
TL;DR: CKD and its main risk factors are common and represent a definite health threat in this region of Iran and using and standardizing less expensive screening tests in low resource countries could be a good alternative that may improve the outcome through early detection of CKD.
