Advances in sustainable approaches to recover metals from e-waste-A review

Precious metals are widely applied in many industry fields due to their excellent corrosion resistance, good electrical conductivity and high catalytic activity. However, the reserves of precious metals falls short of the production globally. The rapid generation of end-of-life products has become the significant resources of precious metals. Among these products, electronic waste (e-waste) and spent catalysts are more concentrated since they account for over 90% of precious metals in industry. This article provides an overview of various technologies on the recovery of precious metals from e-waste and spent catalysts. It shows that recycling technologies have been significantly improved in recent years. The recycling processes have transferred from leaching by aqua regia, cyanide and chlorine in acid solution to less pollution agents leaching. Environment-oriented technologies have been raised great attention in precious metals recycling. The advantages and environmental impacts of these recycling technologies have been discussed in detail. However, there are still some challenges for future promotion. In order to achieve the environment-friendly and sustainable recycling for precious metals with high recovery rate, several considerations have been proposed.

Recovery of precious metals from electronic waste and spent catalysts: A review

Microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry (MP-AES) and its applications – A critical review

The recovery of precious metals like palladium (Pd) from secondary resources has enormous economic benefits and is in favor of resource reuse. In this work, we prepared a high efficiency pyridine-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) adsorbent for selective separation of Pd(II) from simulated electronic waste leachate, by one-pot γ-ray radiation-induced simultaneous grafting polymerization (RIGP) of 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) from graphene oxide (GO) and reduction of GO. The poly(4-vinylpyridine)-grafted reduced graphene oxide (rGO-g-P4VP) exhibits fast adsorption kinetics and high maximum adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity is 105 mg g-1 in the first minute and reaches equilibrium within 120 min. The adsorption process follows the Langmuir model, from which the maximum adsorption capacity of Pd(II) is estimated to be 177 mg g-1. We also proved that the adsorption mechanism of Pd(II) on rGO-g-P4VP involves both ion exchange and coordination adsorption by XPS analysis. Most importantly, the loss of oxygen-containing groups due to reduction of GO not only facilitates the separation of adsorbent from aqueous solution but also reduces the electrostatic repulsion toward Pd(II)Cl42- in hydrochloric acid solution, leading to a higher adsorption selectivity of Pd(II) over some common metal cations in electronic waste including Fe(III), Cu(II), and Al(III) compared with poly(4-vinylpyridine)-grafted graphene oxide (GO-g-P4VP) prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization. Other precious metals like Pt(IV) and Au(III) can also be recovered easily and selectively by rGO-g-P4VP. This work demonstrates that rGO-g-P4VP prepared by the facile RIGP is a promising adsorbent for recovery of precious metals from secondary resources like electronic waste leachate.

Selective Separation of Pd(II) on Pyridine-Functionalized Graphene Oxide Prepared by Radiation-Induced Simultaneous Grafting Polymerization and Reduction.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are an essential and central component of electronic waste. The rapid depletion of natural resources, massive generation of end-of-life PCBs and inherently metal-loaded values inevitably call for recycling and recovery. This review critically discusses the systematic and sequential processes adopted for PCB metallic recoveries via physical, pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and combined technologies. Pre-treatments play a decisive and significant role in upgradation and efficient metal extraction. A novel combination of different pre-treatments and hybrid thermal-chemical routes are often reported for improved separation efficiency and performance. Selective recovery (using solvent extraction, precipitation, polymer inclusion membrane, adsorption, ion exchange) of high purity product from multi-elemental leach solution has recently gained interest and is reviewed. Current recycling techniques at a commercial scale are preferably based on pyrometallurgy (smelting-refining), where electronic waste is only a fraction of the total feed stream. Electronic components such as monolithic ceramic capacitors, tantalum capacitors, integrated circuits, and central processing units mounted on the PCBs are important due to precious metals' presence. The futuristic recycling perspective should treat base and precious metal-rich components separately with minimal environmental effect, end product usage, and maximum economic benefit. Sustainable processing routes for converting discarded PCBs into value-added products should also be attempted, as amplified in this review. An integrated, definite framework for full resource recovery from waste PCBs was proposed. 

A comprehensive review on the recycling of discarded printed circuit boards for resource recovery

Palladium finds a remarkable use in electronic devices and catalysts; therefore, an efficient and complete recovery from the containing secondary materials assumes a great relevance. The present paper discusses recovery of palladium (Pd) contained in monolithic ceramic capacitors from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) of electrical and electronic equipment by hydrometallurgical techniques. Samples, after a milling step, were leached by aqua regia varying the operative conditions. Parameters such as lixiviant concentration, solid/liquid ratio and temperature were investigated. Pd was separated from the leach solution by solvent extraction using Aliquat 336 as an extractant in limonene. This solvent was studied as alternative to the usual ones because it is a renewable organic diluent, with low-toxicity and easily available. After the extraction the organic phase was treated with sodium borohydride to precipitate metallic palladium obtaining a recovery rate of 83% with a purity grade of 98.8%. Based on the results of the present study, a process flow sheet was proposed for industrial implementation.
