Background: Rural US communities experience health disparities, including a lower prevalence of physical activity (PA). However, “Positive Deviants”—rural communities with greater PA than their peers—exist. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that help create physically active rural US communities. Methods: Stakeholder interviews, on-site intercept interviews, and in-person observations were used to form a comparative case study of two rural counties with high PA prevalence (HPAs) and one with low PA prevalence (LPA) from a southern US state, selected based on rurality and adult PA prevalence. Interview transcripts were inductively coded by three readers, resulting in a thematic structure that aligned with a Community Capital Framework, which was then used for deductive coding and analysis. Results: Fifteen stakeholder interviews, nine intercept interviews, and on-site observations were conducted. Human and Organizational Capital differed between the HPAs and LPA, manifesting as Social, Built, Financial, and Political Capital differences and a possible “spiraling-up” or cyclical effect through increasing PA and health (Human Capital), highlighting a potential causal model for future study. Conclusions: Multi-organizational PA coalitions may hold promise for rural PA by directly influencing Human and Organizational Capital in the short term and the other forms of capital in the long term.

What Sets Physically Active Rural Communities Apart from Less Active Ones? A Comparative Case Study of Three US Counties.

Purpose A novel first-year experience course was developed using culturally responsive teaching strategies at an undergraduate liberal arts college in the southeastern USA to promote health advocacy and to provide students with an overview of male health. The course focuses on the biological, sociocultural, economic and gender influences that shape men's health beliefs and practices. It also emphasizes health disparities in the USA among Black/African American men compared to other racial groups and intervention strategies to improve health outcomes.Design/methodology/approach The lecture and laboratory components of the course were designed as a blended learning environment with a modified flipped class model. Culturally relevant strategies guided the course design with three focus domains: academic success, cultural competence and sociopolitical consciousness. A community engagement model and service-learning activities were also incorporated in the design. The authors used course grades to gauge learning and implemented a survey to assess students' perception of the knowledge gained in three realms: men's health, health sciences and physical sciences.Findings This report describes the course design, highlights the value of using culturally responsive teaching strategies and service-learning projects to encourage students' active learning. Course activity examples are discussed with student responses. The authors found that students' perception of their knowledge in men's health, health sciences and physical sciences increased and the students performed well in the course.Originality/value This is one of few biology courses in the nation that intentionally focuses on the unique health challenges of Black men, while empowering college students to develop culturally competent strategies to improve their health outcomes. The findings suggest that the students learned the material and that their perceived knowledge on men's health increased. The authors urge other academic institutions and healthcare providers to consider implementation of similar courses in an effort to enhance male health equity.

Development of a Men's Health course for first-year undergraduates using culturally responsive teaching strategies

INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular disease (CVD), accounting for one in every four U.S. deaths, has had a devastating impact on Mississippi's African American population. Seeking innovative mitigation models, this study assesses CVD prevalence and reach via barbershops to rural Mississippi African Americans. METHODS Data was collected from barbershop clientele who consented to be screened and contacted for referral to clinical care if blood pressure was found to be elevated. RESULTS Most participants were African American (97.7%, n=2,756) and male (54.4%). Descriptive findings revealed more than one-third of participants (34.2%) had elevated blood pressure at screening. Factoring in those with hypertension in control, we found lower rates of hypertension in the male population (males 51.4% vs. females 57.8%), a sharp contrast to national rates. CONCLUSION Evaluation findings suggest CVD prevalence in rural Mississippi is comparatively high but that barbershop partners were able to successfully reach and screen the target population.
