Fuzzy logic control was originally introduced and developed as a model free control design approach. However, it unfortunately suffers from criticism of lacking of systematic stability analysis and controller design though it has a great success in industry applications. In the past ten years or so, prevailing research efforts on fuzzy logic control have been devoted to model-based fuzzy control systems that guarantee not only stability but also performance of closed-loop fuzzy control systems. This paper presents a survey on recent developments (or state of the art) of analysis and design of model based fuzzy control systems. Attention will be focused on stability analysis and controller design based on the so-called Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models or fuzzy dynamic models. A Survey on Analysis and Design of Model-Based Fuzzy Control Systems

Proposes a simple but robust model independent self-tuning scheme for fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs). Here, the output scaling factor (SF) is adjusted online by fuzzy rules according to the current trend of the controlled process. The rule-base for tuning the output SF is defined on error (e) and change of error (/spl Delta/e) of the controlled variable using the most natural and unbiased membership functions (MFs). The proposed self-tuning technique is applied to both PI- and PD-type FLCs to conduct simulation analysis for a wide range of different linear and nonlinear second-order processes including a marginally stable system where even the well known Ziegler-Nichols tuned conventional PI or PID controllers fail to provide an acceptable performance due to excessively large overshoot. Performances of the proposed self-tuning FLCs are compared with those of their corresponding conventional FLCs in terms of several performance measures such as peak overshoot, settling time, rise time, integral absolute error and integral-of-time-multiplied absolute error, in addition to the responses due to step set-point change and load disturbance and, in each case, the proposed scheme shows a remarkably improved performance over its conventional counterpart.

A robust self-tuning scheme for PI- and PD-type fuzzy controllers

The paper presents a comparison between different methods, based on fuzzy logic, for the tuning of PID controllers. Specifically considered are different control structures in which a fuzzy mechanism is adopted to improve the performances given by Ziegler-Nichols parameters. To verify the full capabilities of each controller, genetic algorithms are used to tune the parameters of the fuzzy inference systems (scaling coefficients, shape of the membership functions, etc.). Furthermore, a discussion about the practical implementation issue of the controllers is provided, and comparisons made with a typical PID-like fuzzy controller and a standard nonlinear PID controller. The results show the superiority of the fuzzy set-point weighting methodology over the other methods.

Tuning of PID controllers with fuzzy logic

The majority of the research work on fuzzy PID controllers focuses on the conventional two-input PI or PD type controller proposed by Mamdani (1974). However, fuzzy PID controller design is still a complex task due to the involvement of a large number of parameters in defining the fuzzy rule base. This paper investigates different fuzzy PID controller structures, including the Mamdani-type controller. By expressing the fuzzy rules in different forms, each PLD structure is distinctly identified. For purpose of analysis, a linear-like fuzzy controller is defined. A simple analytical procedure is developed to deduce the closed form solution for a three-input fuzzy inference. This solution is used to identify the fuzzy PID action of each structure type in the dissociated form. The solution for single-input-single-output nonlinear fuzzy inferences illustrates the effect of nonlinearity tuning. The design of a fuzzy PID controller is then treated as a two-level tuning problem. The first level tunes the nonlinear PID gains and the second level tunes the linear gains, including scale factors of fuzzy variables. By assigning a minimum number of rules to each type, the linear and nonlinear gains are deduced and explicitly presented. The tuning characteristics of different fuzzy PID structures are evaluated with respect to their functional behaviors. The rule decoupled and one-input rule structures proposed in this paper provide greater flexibility and better functional properties than the conventional fuzzy PHD structures.

Analysis of direct action fuzzy PID controller structures

This paper describes the design principle, tracking performance, and stability analysis of a fuzzy proportional-derivative (PD) controller. First, the fuzzy PD controller is derived from the conventional continuous-time linear PD controller. Then, the fuzzification, control-rule base, and defuzzification in the design of the fuzzy PD controller are discussed in detail. The resulting controller is a discrete-time fuzzy version of the conventional PD controller, which has the same linear structure in the proportional and the derivative parts but has nonconstant gains: both the proportional and derivative gains are nonlinear functions of the input signals. The new fuzzy PD controller thus preserves the simple linear structure of the conventional PD controller yet enhances its self-tuning control capability. Computer simulation results have demonstrated this advantage of the fuzzy PD controller, particularly when the process to be controlled is nonlinear. After a detailed stability analysis, where a simple and realistic sufficient condition for the bounded-input/bounded-output stability of the overall feedback control system was derived, several computer simulation results are compared with the conventional PD controller. Although the conventional and fuzzy PD controllers are not exactly comparable, the authors compare them in order to have a sense of how well the fuzzy PD controller performs. For this reason, in the simulations several first-order and second-order linear systems, with or without time-delays, are first used to test the performance of the fuzzy PD controller for step reference inputs: the fuzzy PD control systems show remarkable performance, as well as (if not better than) the conventional PD control systems. Moreover, the fuzzy PD controller is compared to the conventional PD controller for a particular second-order linear system, showing the advantage of the fuzzy PD controller over the conventional one in the sense that in order to obtain the same control performance the conventional PD controller has to employ an extremely large gain while the fuzzy controller uses a reasonably small gain. Finally, in the case of nonlinear systems, the authors provide some examples to show that the fuzzy PD controller can track the set-points satisfactorily but the conventional PD controller cannot. >
