TL;DR: Marton et al. as mentioned in this paper found that the higher achievement of this group, demonstrated at individually administered oral sessions, was interpreted as a function of a combination of intentional control of the locus and level of attention.
Abstract: Marton, F. 1974. Some Effects of Content‐neutral Instructions on Non‐verbatim Learning in a Natural Setting. Scand. J. educ. Res. 18,199‐208. Two randomized groups of subjects were asked to read three chapters of one of their set‐books in a natural setting (at home). The experimental group was given content‐neutral instructions which were intended to induce deep level processing. The higher achievement of this group, demonstrated at individually administered oral sessions, was interpreted as a function of a combination of intentional control of the locus and level of attention.
