Tourism, although a relevant part of the modern lifestyle in economically more developed countries, is even in these countries not accessible to all, with particular barriers existing for persons with disabilities. These barriers are not only physical, but also internal, cultural and social. Tourism and leisure have revealed many benefits for individuals with a disability, enhancing personal development, quality of life, recovery and contribution to social inclusion. This article discusses the potential of tourism for people with disability and presents the results of an exploratory study undertaken in Portugal aiming at a better understanding of this market and its profile, desires and constraints experienced when participating in holidays and leisure activities. This information should contribute to the debate on the potential contributions of tourism to improving social inclusion of persons with disability, while simultaneously permitting tourism providers to better integrate this group in their clientele.

A call for a broader citizenship : parent-led autism advocacy movement in Portugal

In this paper we intend to articulate a multidimensional perspective on citizenship with a psychological understanding of lesbian and gay identities' development in the context of a Southern European country: Portugal. We begin by reviewing some legal statements and institutional regulations around gay and lesbian issues and the lack of opportunities for the affirmation of a non-hegemonic (sexual) identity in Portugal. Next, we describe participation efforts developed by the Portuguese LGBT nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and the actual results that such efforts already produced in the political and cultural attitudes toward gay men and lesbians: particularly, the legal approval of domestic same-sex partnership is emphasized as a symbolic achievement of such political struggle. Finally, we explore the implications of communitarian participation for gay and lesbian identities' development, not just in terms of collective empowerment but also in what concerns individual development and well-being.

From an oppressed citizenship to affirmative identities: lesbian and gay political participation in Portugal.

Com base numa analise da legislacao publicada em Portugal nas ultimas tres decadas referente as pessoas com deficiencia, o presente artigo considera as politicas de deficiencia desenvolvidas entre 1974 e 2008. De modo a balizar esta analise, numa primeira parte identifico os pressupostos teoricos que informam o presente artigo, fazendo uma breve revisao dos modelos teorico-analiticos dominantes nesta area de investigacao. Segue-se uma revisao critica das politicas direccionadas as pessoas com deficiencia em Portugal, identificando caracteristicas, tendencias e ideologias subjacentes. Por ultimo procuro tracar as caracteristicas da accao estatal neste dominio decorrentes da analise da aplicacao das politicas de deficiencia em Portugal.

Pessoas com deficiência e políticas sociais em Portugal: da caridade à cidadania social

Nao obstante o interesse das ciencias sociais nas questoes de exclusao e desigualdade, a questao da deficiencia, enquanto eixo central de reflexao, permanece ausente em muitos contextos academicos. A emergencia dos Disability Studies deve muito aos contextos em que o ativismo das pessoas com deficiencia fez relevar as condicoes estruturais que oprimem e negligenciam as experiencias da deficiencia. Nesse sentido, tendo em conta as especificidades do ambiente sociopolitico portugues, no presente texto desenvolvem‑se duas linhas de inquiricao. Primeira, quais os desafios para que na academia portuguesa vingue a perspetiva de fazer da deficiencia uma questao central, em termos passiveis de confrontar o silenciamento que as vozes e experiencias das pessoas com deficiencia enfrentam na vida social? Segunda, que importância deve ser dada ao engajamento da investigacao com um paradigma etico e politico em prol dos direitos das pessoas com deficiencia?

A emancipação dos estudos da deficiência

The increased variety of social conflicts in the post-1960 years resulted in the extension of the individual’s participation in the state’s activity. This change was mirrored by the emergence of new social movements and the related expansion of the notion of citizenship. New groups of people, including disabled people, have emerged claiming citizenship rights. In order to do this, disabled people started to coalesce into uni-impairment and multi-impairment groups and organisations to denounce social exclusion and legal oppression, as well as to demand rights as citizens. Partially based on my research about social citizenship and the Disabled People’s Movement, this article investigates, firstly, the seeds and development of the Portuguese Disabled People’s Movement, secondly, its aims, demands and action strategies and, finally, its impact in the lives of disabled people in Portugal.

The Portuguese Disabled People’s Movement: development, demands and outcomes

Despite the interest of the social sciences in issues of exclusion and inequality, the question of disability, as a key issue of reflection, remains absent from many academic areas. The emergence of disability studies owes much to contexts in which the activism of disabled people has revealed the structural conditions that oppress and neglect experiences of disability. Bearing in mind the specific features of the Portuguese socio-political environment, two lines of inquiry are developed in this text. Firstly, what are the challenges faced by Portuguese academics in making disability a central issue, enabling it to confront the silencing of the voices and experiences of disabled people in society? Secondly, how important is it for research to engage with an ethical and political paradigm that supports the rights of disabled people?
