Quality of service approaches in IoT: A systematic mapping

Real-time air pollution monitoring with sensors on city bus

As air pollution is becoming the largest environmental health risk, the monitoring of air quality has drawn much attention in both theoretical studies and practical implementations. In this article, we present a real-time, fine-grained, and power-efficient air quality monitor system based on aerial and ground sensing. The architecture of this system consists of the sensing layer to collect data, the transmission layer to enable bidirectional communications, the processing layer to analyze and process the data, and the presentation layer to provide a graphic interface for users. Three major techniques are investigated in our implementation for data processing, deployment strategy, and power control. For data processing, spatial fitting and short-term prediction are performed to eliminate the influences of incomplete measurement and the latency of data uploading. The deployment strategies of ground sensing and aerial sensing are investigated to improve the quality of the collected data. Power control is further considered to balance between power consumption and data accuracy. Our implementation has been deployed in Peking University and Xidian University since February 2018, and has collected almost 100,000 effective values thus far.

UAV Aided Aerial-Ground IoT for Air Quality Sensing in Smart City: Architecture, Technologies, and Implementation

We have developed a low-cost wireless monitoring system, that enables air quality referential parameters measurements based on a multilayer distributed model with an Arduino platform. This is an Internet of Things application, of which a physical object is embedded with electronics, software, sensors and wireless connectivity to allow monitoring air pollution on real-time. Agile methodologies such as Scrum and Extreme Programming were used in order to ensure software quality. The electronic device is equipped with three sensors, which determines carbon monoxide (CO) as well as carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and powder density, using an API developed in C++ language. The validation of the mentioned concept has been realized in a variety of sites in Ecuador, namely in the cities of Quito, Amaguana and Tena. The obtained results of air pollutants concentration are compared and conformable with the referential values established by international environment organizations like World Health Organization (WHO) and US EPA.

Distributed System as Internet of Things for a new low-cost, Air Pollution Wireless Monitoring on Real Time

Congestion of vehicular traffic in the cities with the highest population density results into a high amount of accidents and also to imminent road violence above average. Facing this problem, our study intends to implement a low-cost Internet of Thing proposal, in order to monitor and analyze traffic circulation and provide solutions to reduce the above mentioned negative effects. To fulfill such proposal, a system of low-cost wireless monitoring has been designed and developed, which is supported on a distributed multilayer model. This system interacts with a device consisting of two electronic Arduino platforms, which themselves interact in master-slave mode having a distance sensor based on laser for detection of vehicles. The latter has the ability to connect to the Internet transmitting in real-time data taken by HTTP requests over the cellular network. On the data collected an engine for data mining is mounted in order to receive information about the traffic on highways and subsequently proposing potential solutions. The proof of concept has been applied in the city of Quito. There, on over their two central lanes of the Simon Bolivar Avenue such kind of solutions have been applied with positive results, both in the operation of the software and hardware that compose the prototype, as well as in reference measurements of traffic. Based on our findings, the system manages to suggest extrapolations, which enables to reduce traffic congestion, fuel waste, and also air pollution.

A Low-cost IoT Application for the Urban Traffic of Vehicles, based on Wireless Sensors using GSM Technology

This research has been leveraged in a conceptual framework which presents the relationships between Mechatronics and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) to get complex systems based on a concept of inter and muti-disciplinary collaboration design methodology. As it is demonstrated, a combination of tools was used, methods and techniques to conceive, design, implement and operate an UGV as a prototype using the complex system approach preparing it to a future launch with the Industry 4.0 environment.

Design and implementation of complex systems using Mechatronics and Cyber-Physical Systems approaches

Given the lack of completeness of the current implementations of parental control software along with the novel characteristics parents demand on these pieces of software, this paper presents the design decisions and implementation of parental control mechanisms that both register and avoid inappropriate content accesses by children and teenagers through the Internet. We first evaluated the state-of-the-art tools assessing their functionality, efficiency, usability, security, and accuracy. Then, we conducted an exploratory study spanning surveys of a representative sample of children, parents and network administrators to determine the baseline and the main requirements this sort of software must fulfil. With such foundations, we have implemented an application and front-end interface following criteria as relevance and internal consistency. As development method, we have applied Object Oriented Hypermedia Design combined with Natural Language Processing that uses the Boolean Retrieval Model by means of string searching algorithms as Boyer-Moore and fuzzy string search. The results show that not only inappropriate content accesses through the Internet have been blocked, but also that the proposal provides parents with mechanisms to control and measure their children’s Internet use as a fundamental mean in the process of prevention and awareness among the young population.

On the Development of Advanced Parental Control Tools

Based on the analysis of existing name recognition techniques, an improvement in efficiency of such undertaking in matching citizen's registers is proposed with the introduction of a new algorithm. In order to fulfill the mentioned conditions, a case study initiates with a spin of two representative but random samples, which assess real-life circumstances. The first sample contains a great variety of tourist's names from all over the world collected from visitors of the Galapagos Islands in the past three years, at about the last population census. The second sample has been used with islands' resident names out of the last census. The used algorithm matches the sampled with those of the citizens taken from the database of National Registration Identity Card Number Department of Ecuador in two steps. The first step separates the exact coincidences and identifies the top approximate name's coincidences through a phonetic code comparison. The second step includes a refinement of the first one carried out by a distance edition technique. To offer evidence on the effectiveness of those steps, the accuracy and viability quality factors of the algorithm has been evaluated. A final confirmation of the obtained results has been given by the use of a t Pair Test, which determines if there appear any significant differences of those factors prior and after the execution of the new algorithm.
