This paper discusses the characteristics of the cloud computing techniques and further compares the features of the cloud computing to those of the traditional distributed computing. The paper also studies the types and forms of the modern services and requirements in power systems, and therefore aiming at designing and constructing a high-performance platform in enabling scalable power system services based on cloud computing is presented. The details of the platform design including data distribution, process monitoring, data integration and resource scheduling have been fully presented. The application of the platform in a practical power system indicates that it can significantly simplify the design, development and implementation of the power system computing services and systems, which improves the efficiency of the daily services of power system.

Cloud computing based high-performance platform in enabling scalable services in power system

As the central nerve system of the power systems, the control center has evolved over the years into a complex communication, computation, and control system. The traditional control center, SCADA/EMS, was built to automate control functions in electric utilities. With the expansion and interconnection of power systems and the advent of electric power deregulation, electric utility organizations require the integration of control functions with business processes beyond corporate boundaries. The requirement needs the support of the new generation control centers, which should be more decentralized, integrated, flexible and open. Grid technology offers dependable, consistent, and pervasive access to resources irrespective of their different physical locations or heterogeneity, using open standard data formats and transport protocols. It has been utilized to design the novel distributed power system control centers. Data service, as one of the most important components, is the base of other services inside the proposed future control centers framework. This paper gives a brief introduction of the current data acquisition and processing system, and presents the challenges it is being confronted with. The design of the data service in the grid-based future control centers is discussed. The development roadmap for the data service is also considered.

Data service in Grid-based Future Control Centers

Bulk electric power systems (EPS) experience tens and hundreds of thousands of disturbances yearly. Most of the disturbances are eliminated by relay protection and emergency control devices. Failures of these devices, personnel errors and some external factors may result in a cascading development of the emergency that is normally localized and eliminated by emergency control system. The insufficient efficiency and reliability of emergency control system as well as other related reasons lead to unique severe outages - blackouts - often with catastrophic consequences for EPS and consumers.

Blackouts: Remedial measures and restoration practices — Asian and Australian experience

This paper proposes a new method for transient stability analysis in terms of measuring critical clearing time using grid-computing technology. Grid computing is a highly developed system for jointly solving collaborative complex problems; those are required to solve in limited time and therefore they need high performance computing. Probabilistic transient stability analysis is one such application, which requires a lot of computation for accurate results. This paper presents the grid computing based approach for this purpose, which is able to measure the critical clearing time through time domain simulation by using this method. A prototype system is developed in our research lab in order to deploy this technique. Experiments are performed on the prototype grid for probabilistic transient stability analysis on New England 39 bus test system. Results show that this method has capability of providing accurate results with better performance.

Probabilistic Transient Stability Analysis using Grid Computing Technology

As the structure of power networks becomes more complex, power grid dispatch and control system acquires even larger amount of data and faces accelerated data processing pressure. This paper presents several typical clustering architectures and algorithms, and proposes an applicable clustering architecture for very large power grid dispatch and control system. On the basis of this architecture, relevant clustering technologies applied in system platform and applications are presented. Practical application results show the effectiveness of this new architecture.
