Harmonic Analysis of Traction Power Supply System: Case Study of Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit

It is proposed that power quality In AC railway systems should consider low voltage, high voltage form factor and resonant overvoltage rather than the parameters normally considered for public utilities. Each of the 3 system aspects has a conventional means of compensation and a solution using power electronic systems. The paper describes the potential power quality problem areas on AC traction systems and possible means of compensation. The conclusion Is drawn that disturbance levels on AC traction systems are likely to remain higher than disturbance levels within public electricity supplies to achieve lower capital cost for railway networks.

Parameters that influence power quality on industrial frequency AC traction systems

Over the years the optimization in various areas of power system has immensely attracted the attention of power engineers and researchers. Reactive power management (RPM) problem is one of such areas. This is done by the placement of TCSC in the appropriate location and thereafter minimizing the transmission loss of the system. Whale optimization algorithm has been proposed in the current work for providing optimal solution to RPM problem. To test the efficacy of the proposed technique, it has been implemented on standard IEEE 118 bus system. The optimal solution rendered by the proposed method is compared with initial condition. The proposed method of Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) generates a reduction in transmission loss after incorporating TCSC. The comparison thus yields that the WOA method is superior in generating optimality, diversity and is efficient to generate solution strategies for RPM even in a connected power network.

In a deregulated market environment, the calculation of market power is one of the top priorities of the bodies involved in the market. The bodies generally involved such as the Generation companies (GENCOs), Distribution companies (DISCOs) look towards maximizing profit whereas the RTO/ISOs look to attain a zero market power environment. In this paper, Must Run Share and Nodal Must Run Share (NMRS) is used as an index to calculate market power. To focus upon the fast, accurate calculations and understanding the trends of market power under system changes such as various load conditions, transmission line outage and generator outage, Cubic's Spline Interpolation is used as a technique to interpolate between market powers calculated over a few operating condition set points. A demonstration of the employment of such a system is represented in this paper which will help in achieving the objectives of the players or firms involved in the electricity market. This system will be dynamic enough to suggest the operating conditions for a desired level of market power for any of the above named firms under unexpected system changes. The work is done on IEEE 14 bus test system on the MATLAB version R2012b.

This paper proposes a methodology to utilize support vector machines (SVM) as a regressor tool for predicting market power. Both the companies, i.e., Generation (Gencos) and the Distribution (Discos), can utilize this tool to forecast market power on their perspective. Attributes and criterion are to be chosen properly to classify market power. In this paper, the effectiveness of SVM technique in predicting market power is formulated. Independent system operator (ISO) can also use this tool as regressor and it is discussed elaborately. Both linear and nonlinear kernels are compared. Nodal must run share (NMRS) is used as an index for predicting market power. A sample of three-bus system consisting of two generators and one load/two loads is used to illustrate the study.
