Coloured Petri Nets (CPNs) is a language for the modelling and validation of systems in which concurrency, communication, and synchronisation play a major role. Coloured Petri Nets is a discrete-event modelling language combining Petri nets with the functional programming language Standard ML. Petri nets provide the foundation of the graphical notation and the basic primitives for modelling concurrency, communication, and synchronisation. Standard ML provides the primitives for the definition of data types, describing data manipulation, and for creating compact and parameterisable models. A CPN model of a system is an executable model representing the states of the system and the events (transitions) that can cause the system to change state. The CPN language makes it possible to organise a model as a set of modules, and it includes a time concept for representing the time taken to execute events in the modelled system. CPN Tools is an industrial-strength computer tool for constructing and analysing CPN models. Using CPN Tools, it is possible to investigate the behaviour of the modelled system using simulation, to verify properties by means of state space methods and model checking, and to conduct simulation-based performance analysis. User interaction with CPN Tools is based on direct manipulation of the graphical representation of the CPN model using interaction techniques, such as tool palettes and marking menus. A license for CPN Tools can be obtained free of charge, also for commercial use.

Coloured Petri Nets and CPN Tools for modelling and validation of concurrent systems

This article builds on the recent policy diffusion literature and attempts to overcome one of its major problems, namely the lack of a coherent theoretical framework. The literature defines policy diffusion as a process where policy choices are interdependent, and identifies several diffusion mechanisms that specify the link between the policy choices of the various actors. As these mechanisms are grounded in different theories, theoretical accounts of diffusion currently have little internal coherence. In this article we put forward an expected-utility model of policy change that is able to subsume all the diffusion mechanisms. We argue that the expected utility of a policy depends on both its effectiveness and the payoffs it yields, and we show that the various diffusion mechanisms operate by altering these two parameters. Taking 'Galton's Problem' Seriously: Towards a Theory of Policy Diffusion

This paper considers routing and layout issues for parallel aisle warehouses. In such warehouses order pickers walk or drive along the aisles to pick products from storage. They can change aisles at a number of cross aisles. These cross aisles are usually located at the front and the back of the warehouse, but there can also be one or more cross aisles at positions in between. We describe a number of heuristics to determine order picking routes in a warehouse with two or more cross aisles. To analyse the performance of the heuristics, a branch-and-bound algorithm that generates shortest order picking routes is used. Performance comparisons between heuristics and the branch-and-bound algorithm are given for various warehouse layouts and order sizes. For the majority of the instances with more than two cross aisles, a newly developed heuristic appears to perform better than the existing heuristics. In global optimization, a typical population-based stochastic search method works on a set of sample points from the feasible region. In this paper, we study a recently proposed method of this sort. The method utilizes an attraction-repulsion mechanism to move sample points toward optimality and is thus referred to as electromagnetism-like method (EM). The computational results showed that EM is robust in practice, so we further investigate the theoretical structure. After reviewing the original method, we present some necessary modifications for the convergence proof. We show that in the limit, the modified method converges to the vicinity of global optimum with probability one.
