Mathematical Theory of Reliability

As an extension of probability theory, evidence theory is able to better handle unknown and imprecise information. Owing toits advantages, evidence theory has more flexibility and effectiveness for modeling and processing uncertain information.Uncertainty measure plays an essential role both in evidence theory and probability theory.In probability theory, Shannon entropy provides a novel perspective for measuring uncertainty. Various entropies exist for measuring the uncertainty of basic probability assignment (BPA) in evidence theory. However, from the standpoint of the requirements of uncertainty measurement and physics, these entropies are controversial. Therefore, the process for measuring BPA uncertainty currently remains an open issue in the literature.Firstly, this paper reviews the measures of uncertainty in evidence theory followed by an analysis of some related controversies. Secondly, we discuss the development of Deng entropy as an effective way to measure uncertainty, including introducing its definition, analyzing its properties, and comparing it to other measures. We also examine the concept of maximum Deng entropy, the pseudo-Pascal triangle of maximum Deng entropy, generalized belief entropy, and measures of divergence.In addition, we conduct an analysis of the application of Deng entropy and further examine the challenges for future studies on uncertainty measurement in evidence theory. Finally, a conclusion is provided to summarize this study.

Uncertainty measure in evidence theory

The extropy has recently been introduced as the dual concept of entropy. Moreover, in the context of the Dempster–Shafer evidence theory, Deng studied a new measure of discrimination, named the Deng entropy. In this paper, we define the Deng extropy and study its relation with Deng entropy, and examples are proposed in order to compare them. The behaviour of Deng extropy is studied under changes of focal elements. A characterization result is given for the maximum Deng extropy and, finally, a numerical example in pattern recognition is discussed in order to highlight the relevance of the new measure.

A Dual Measure of Uncertainty: The Deng Extropy.

Software risk management is an important factor in ensuring software quality. Therefore, software risk assessment has become a significant and challenging research area. The aim of this study is to establish a data-driven software risk assessment model named DDERM. In the proposed model, experts’ risk assessments of probability and severity can be transformed into basic probability assignments (BPAs). Deng entropy was used to measure the uncertainty of the evaluation and to calculate the criteria weights given by experts. In addition, the adjusted BPAs were fused using the rules of Dempster–Shafer evidence theory (DST). Finally, a risk matrix was used to get the risk priority. A case application demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed risk modeling framework is a novel approach that provides a rational assessment structure for imprecision in software risk and is applicable to solving similar risk management problems in other domains.

An Evidential Software Risk Evaluation Model

Fractals play an important role in nonlinear science. The most important parameter when modeling a fractal is the fractal dimension. Existing information dimension can calculate the dimension of probability distribution. However, calculating the fractal dimension given a mass function, which is the generalization of probability, is still an open problem of immense interest. The main contribution of this work is to propose an information fractal dimension of mass function. Numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness of our proposed dimension. We discover an important property in that the dimension of mass function with the maximum Deng entropy is [Formula: see text], which is the well-known fractal dimension of Sierpiski triangle. The application in complexity analysis of time series illustrates the effectiveness of our method.

A unified formulation of entropy and its application

In this paper, relations between some kinds of cumulative entropies and moments of order statistics are established. By using some characterizations and the symmetry of a non-negative and absolutely continuous random variable X, lower and upper bounds for entropies are obtained and illustrative examples are given. By the relations with the moments of order statistics, a method is shown to compute an estimate of cumulative entropies and an application to testing whether data are exponentially distributed is outlined.

On Cumulative Entropies in Terms of Moments of Order Statistics

Deng entropy and extropy are two measures useful in the Dempster–Shafer evidence theory (DST) to study uncertainty, following the idea that extropy is the dual concept of entropy. In this paper, we present their fractional versions named fractional Deng entropy and extropy and compare them to other measures in the framework of DST. Here, we study the maximum for both of them and give several examples. Finally, we analyze a problem of classification in pattern recognition in order to highlight the importance of these new measures.
